That is what baffles me the most about the story as well. He was worried that somehow incinerating it would allow for bits of the media to leak, so he locked it in a coffin, sealed it in cement and dumped it in the ocean?

I don't know shit about preservation techniques of film, but that seems far more likely to me to have a chance of recovery as opposed to burning it to carbon ash.

Assange is well respected on both sides of the political divide. He has martyr status and wikileaks has a on impeccable record when he was guiding the ship. If the Dems can get to him first and put enough pressure on him, they can control the narrative from the point of one of the most reliable figures in all of this smoke and mirrors.

That is my thinking as well. Their deal would be less carrot and more stick. Probably a threat on his family, never mind him. It would be obvious as hell, but nothing a false flag and political scandal couldn't obsfucate.
