Paul addressed the chaos in the Corinthian Church.

Everyone was speaking in tongues at the same time when the church gathered. And rightly, one wandering in to such a scene would say: WTF?

Let things be done decent and in order.

One or two may speak in tongues in the gathering given that they are spiritually mature to also bring forth the interpretation. Paul encourages growing spiritually by speaking in tongues much in one's own personal prayer life. This is so that the believer might grow spiritually to bring forth a word of prophecy in a gathering. Tongues are a sign to the unbelievers. A sign to wake them to truth.

There is no profit for members of the church to hear another speak in tongues for they understand not what is spoken. The profit then, is the interpretation, the message from God in the language of those present. It is all energized by God.

Done decent and order it is a beautiful exhortation from God and quite profitable.

I suppose you envision folks flopping around and taking up snakes and all that sort of foolishness. Perhaps that goes on. Satan works to conceal the power of God available to the believer. He's done a good job with you it seems as you are firmly set in error regarding the matter.

Speaking in tongues is manifesting holy spirit. It is a tongue of men or angels. Cornelius and his household spoke in tongues. What, were they supposed to convince those Jews present, already born again, of something they didn't already know? Awake to righteousness….
