>Why do we need big Pharma …
In some ways we would be much better off without them. They are beginning to do more harm than good. Death by Medicine is now one of the leading causes of death in the US. The very best medicine we have is in emergency medicine and that is why there were shows like ER in order to highlight that aspect of medicine.
Its complicated, but the problem goes well beyond distribution. Like the military/industrial complex it is vast in its reach and might best be called the Big Pharma/medical establishment complex and propaganda is a major component.
For example, if Trump wants to loosen the corporate grip over the MSM controlling the narrative, then he simply bans all Big Pharma advertising thru the MSM and most fake news collapses over night.
As far as "cures" go, the potential "cures" are most often licensed by Big Pharma and then shelved or used in combo with one of their blockbusters in order to get more time on their original patents.
Having studied this area for more than 20 years, I think one possible solution is to form nonprofit drug companies around specific disease indications with the only goal being to get "cures" thru the approval process and on the market without trying to protect intellectual property rights. There are many great therapeutic opportunities that are simply ignored because there is no way to get a patent position (monopoly). This creates a significant obstacle for someone who really is interested in finding a "cure."
