It’s a familiar feeling: Type something into Google’s search bar, and then start seeing ads for it everywhere. Sometimes you don’t even need to search—Google’s already triangulated your desires based on your emails, your demographics, your location. Now that familiarity stands to get a lot more intimate. With a fascinating pair of new patents for smart-home technology, Google is hoping users will open their home to its trademark eavesdropping.

In the first patent, Google imagines devices that would scan and analyze the surroundings of your home, then offer you content based on what they detect. According to the patent, the smart cameras in such a device could, for example, recognize Will Smith’s face on a T-shirt on the floor of a user’s closet. After matching this analysis against your browser history, the device might then say aloud, “You seem to like Will Smith. His new movie is playing in a theater near you.”

It doesn’t stop at Will Smith movies. The patent imagines that smart-home devices would make all types of inferences about users, sorting them into categories based on what the devices see in their most personal spaces. Using object recognition, they could calculate “fashion taste” by scanning your clothing, and even estimate your income based on any “expensive mechanical and/or electronic devices” they detect. Audio signatures, too, could be used to not only identify users, but to determine gender and age based on the timbre of their voice. The smart home would recommend what to watch and where to shop, all based on how it sorts users into categories of taste, income, and interest.

Democrats preparing to take over the House are aiming to roll back what they see as US President Donald Trump's overly aggressive nuclear strategy.

Their goals include eliminating money for Trump’s planned expansion of the US atomic arsenal, including a new long-range ballistic missile and development of a smaller, battlefield nuclear bomb that critics say is more likely than a traditional nuke to be used in combat.

They also want to stymie the administration's efforts to unravel arms control pacts with Russia. And they even aim to dilute Trump's sole authority to order the use of nuclear arms, following the president’s threats to unleash “fire and fury” on North Korea and other loose talk about doomsday weapons.

The incoming House majority will have lots of leverage, even with control of only one chamber in the Capitol, veterans of nuclear policy say.

‘Toxic gas attack’ by rebels injures 100 in Aleppo, says Syrian media

Shelling by insurgents wounded more than 100 people in a suspected toxic gas attack in Syria’s Aleppo, which a health official said was the first such assault in the city.

The shells caused dozens of people breathing problems on Saturday night in Aleppo, while government shelling killed nine people in a village in Idlib, a monitoring group said.

State news agency SANA said on Sunday 107 people were injured in Aleppo after militants hit three districts with projectiles containing gases that caused choking.

The independence-leaning party lost seven of its 13 cities and counties in Saturday’s polls, including two special municipalities, as a disgruntled electorate handed it a vote of no confidence. Analysts described the result as a turnaround in political influence, four years on from the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) suffering a similar election setback.

Scientists surveyed the genetic ‘bar codes’ of five million animals – including humans – from 100,000 different species and deduced that we sprang from a single pair of adults after a catastrophic event almost wiped out the human race.

These bar codes, or snippets of DNA that reside outside the nuclei of living cells, suggest that it’s not just people who came from a single pair of beings, but nine out of every 10 animal species, too

Stoeckle and Thaler, the scientists who headed the study, concluded that ninety percent of all animal species alive today come from parents that all began giving birth at roughly the same time, less than 250 thousand years ago – throwing into doubt the patterns of human evolution.

‘This conclusion is very surprising,’ Thaler admitted, ‘and I fought against it as hard as I could.’

The new report from experts at the Rockefeller University along with from the University of Basel published the extraordinary findings in Human Evolution.

The research was led by Senior Research Associate Mark Stoeckle and Research Associate David Thaler of the University of Basel, Switzerland.

They mined ‘big data’ insights from the world’s fast-growing genetic databases and reviewed a large literature in evolutionary theory, including Darwin.

Merkel’s would-be successor questions Germany’s sacrosanct asylum pledge

Friedrich Merz, trailing in the race to succeed Chancellor Angela Merkel as leader of her Christian Democrats (CDU), sparked uproar by questioning Germany’s constitutional guarantee of asylum at a hustings late on Wednesday (21 November).

Germany’s constitution, drafted to atone for World War Two Nazi crimes, guarantees asylum to all “politically persecuted” – a simpler commitment in the past when it covered a handful of Soviet dissidents during the Cold War than in the present, when millions seek sanctuary in Europe from war and poverty.

At a hustings in the eastern state of Thueringen, where hostility to immigrants helped propel the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) to second place in last year’s national election, Merz said this might have to change.

“We must be prepared to discuss the constitutional right to asylum if we seriously want a European immigration and refugee policy,” he said, to applause from local party delegates.

He said that Berlin’s constitutional guarantee was “unique” in the European Union, meaning it could be obliged to take refugees rejected under a common European asylum policy. The bloc is divided over how it should cope with an influx of migrants, many fleeing civil war in Syria.

Swedish police advise people to mark their belongings with DNA as robbery becomes increasingly normal

Personal robbery is now so common in Sweden that the police urge Swedes to DNA mark their belongings. Especially in winter, the robbery of expensive jackets increases, according to the police.

In order to prevent personal robbery, but also to be able to tie suspects to crime, the police now urge Swedes to use so-called SelectaDNA on their and their children’s winter jackets, mobile phones and other “attractive belongings”.

A marked garment increases the chance of recovering the stolen goods and tying a suspect to the crime, says the police.

“Thefts in shops, schools and changing rooms are increasing as well,” says Claes Rohit, crime preventer at Nacka police district.

UK: Parents called racists for questioning the age of a child migrant with a moustache in their daughter’s class

A migrant, claiming to be a 15-year-old pupil at Stoke High School in Ipswich, admits to another student he is 25-years-old, married with children.

When the ‘boy’ was introduced to the school, he was presented as a teenager, born in Iran, with an amazing life story.

Forced to flee the Middle Eastern theocracy, he and his younger brother arrived in the UK, claiming asylum as 15 and 12-years-old boys.

The men were informed that as ‘child refugees’ they should remain in full-time education and that the local authority would look after them until they are 25-years-old.

This didn’t sit well with parents and other pupils after pictures of the Middle Eastern migrant was shared on social media with the caption: “How’s there a 30-year-old man in our maths class?”

The school accused the parents of being racist for their complaints of the 6ft 1ins Iranian whom they’d found pictured on his Facebook with a moustache drinking beer.

One parent who kept his young daughters out of the school until the man’s removal said: “I’m ashamed both for the school and the Government for allowing this to happen.

“They have both failed to protect our children. The teachers should be sacked.”

The British public have been told that the migrants taken in under the ‘child refugee scheme’ would be toddlers and pre-teens, similarly to the Jewish children brought to Britain before the Second World War.

The EU’s political correctness and ‘censorship’ will backfire – Hungarian Prime Minister

In a Friday morning interview with Kossuth Radio, the Hungarian Prime Minister criticised migrant debit cards, political correctness and censorship in Europe.

Viktor Orban said he was surprised by the handing out of migrant debit cards. “The issue of the migrant debit cards came as a surprise even for weather-beaten veterans like me,” the Prime Minister said.

Orban heavily criticised the initiative by pointing to security: “handing out anonymous debit cards to ‘people we don’t know’ is a direct threat to the lives of Europeans.”

He warned that political correctness and the prohibition to talk about things that are obvious will backfire. Concerning Europe’s current debate on humanity, philosophy and politics he said:

Sea Of Azov Becomes Next Ukrainian-Russian War Zone As Reports Russia Rams Tugboat

The Sea of Azov has become the next war zone between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, as the 2014 annexation of the Crimean peninsula by Moscow has given Russia control of the body of water, and also control over access to Ukrainian ports. With the building of the Kerch Bridge, linking Russia to Crimea, the situation has grown quite tense with Russian patrol boats boarding Ukrainian vessels in an attempt to harass shipping to the port of Mariupol and other Ukrainian ports along its coast.

Today, in an escalation of tensions, reports are that Russia rammed a Ukrainian tugboat that was being escorted by two Ukrainian warships in the Kirch Strait.

Ukraine says a Russian coast guard vessel has rammed one of its navy tugboats off the Moscow-annexed Crimean Peninsula in “openly aggressive actions,” resulting in damage to the ship. The Ukrainian Navy said the incident took place on November 25 as three of its ships including two small warships were transiting from the Black Sea port of Odessa to Mariupol in the Sea of Azov, via the Kerch Strait between Crimea and Russia.

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), which oversees the country’s border guard service, accused Kyiv of illegally entering its waters and deliberately provoking a conflict, reported RFERL.
