They just had to ease everyone into the more extreme forms.
If it's done before and then some tell the truth at the hearing [why lie now?] some could be an be acquitted or given less punishment for telling the truth? Being honest?

If they spoke after everyone learned the truth from the documents the speaking would re-enforce that truth; could create a healing and a bringing together of two sides.
Also once the FISA is declassed unredacted and released., what would be their motive to lie? How would they lie their way out?
