I personally think it was McVeigh. (Yeah, there's a bunch of fraudulent FBI forensic evidence in that case). But looking at his record, his record was exemplary. Every commander wants a kid like that. Confident. Inspiring. Team player.
I think Iraq put the zap on his head. I think he saw how zealous the Hajis were and realized the US needs to be violently awakened. He wanted to be executed. He wanted tougher anti-terrorism legislation. He got it.
