The Australian secret intelligence service (ASIS) is the equivilent of the CIA in Australia, and is responsible for foreign intelligence. ASIS is directly accountable to the Minister for Foreign Affairs. Alexander Downer is the longest serving Foreign Affairs minister in Australian history, serving for nearly 12 years. Just before he finished up, in 2006 he set the Australian government to give the CF $25M and in 2007 he set up a deal with Rosatom to provide it with $1M AUD worth of Uranium (Sound familiar?).

Now fast forward to 2016 and he balls deep in Spygate and muh Russia. If Australia was using ASIS to spy on the Trump Campaign, Downer would have most likely convinced Julie Bishop, the then Minister of Foreign Affairs, to do so. Julie Bishop and Malcolm Turnbull both resigned a few months ago, and the Director-General of ASIS as this was all going on was Nick Warner, whom stopped being director in 2017 (cant find out if he resigned), but good timing none the less. Technically Turnbull resigned because of a leadership spill but if ASIS was being used to spy then we know why.

Interested to see if Downer was acting rogue. Highly doubt it considered the other resignations.
