Former Russian Defense Ministry official arrested on bribery charges

A former Russian Defense Ministry official and ex-official at Moscow’s CSKA sports club has been arrested on bribery charges.

Mikhail Baryshev, who organized the Third World Army Games in 2016, was arrested in Moscow on November 23 on suspicion of accepting a 23.5 million-ruble ($355,000) bribe.

He will be held in pretrial detention for two months.

Investigators say Baryshev accepted bribes from private companies who received contracts to provide services for the World Army Games, held in Sochi.

Facebook is the tip of the iceberg

Frontline finished airing a two-part series on Facebook and incalculable damage that Facebook has done around the world. It’s not hyperbole to say that Facebook has been a Destroyer of Worlds. They meant to do it in the sense of using technology to change the world but they didn’t mean to do it in the sense of destroying the world. They were young. They developed a computer system but they never gave a serious thought to the potential for harm even as it was being pointed out to them – at least that’s the impression.

Frontline did such a good job on the exposé of Facebook, it seems an opportune moment to point out that our government systems were redesigned by young people who had the very same mindset as Mark Zuckerberg. They were given license to do it by the Clinton Administration without a single thought to the negative consequences of what they were doing. The adults went on vacation and the young people took over the house. The adults didn’t understand the technology nor the power of computer systems but they did understand the profit potential so they turned the young people loose.

In 2004, Treasury Secretary John Snow was the guest at a meeting of the National Press Club after the crash. He gave a status of the U.S. economy.

That $7 trillion dollars didn’t just vanish. It went into somebody’s pocket. The guess would be that it went into the pockets of the people who engineered the dot.com boom. They were not naive about the technology, the power of computer systems or the market. Only one person went to jail for that $7 trillion robbery. That person was Frank Quattrone, a Tech Stock Analyst from Silicon Valley. He was the fall guy while the real criminals got away with the money. Who were the real criminals? Businessweek’s list of the Top 25 Power Brokers in 1997 would be a good place to start. Notice how many of them are lawyers. And in particular, notice John Doerr of Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers.

The United Arab Emirates on Monday pardoned British academic Matthew Hedges just days after sentencing him to life in prison for spying in a case that stunned Britain and his family.

Global body of nuns denounces ‘culture of silence and secrecy’ around sexual abuse in Catholic Church

The Catholic Church’s global organisation of nuns has denounced the “culture of silence and secrecy” surrounding sexual abuse in the church and is urging sisters who have been abused to report the crimes to police and their superiors.

The International Union of Superiors General, which represents more than 500,000 sisters worldwide, vowed to help nuns who have been abused to find the courage to report it, and pledged to help victims heal and seek justice.

The statement, issued on the eve of the UN-designated International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, was the first from the Rome-based UISG since the abuse scandal erupted anew this year and as the sexual abuse of adult nuns by clergymen has also come to light. The AP reported earlier this year that the Vatican has known for decades about the problem of priests and bishops preying on nuns, but has done next to nothing to stop it.

Indian police file rape case against Bollywood actor Alok Nath in rare #MeToo development

Indian police have registered a rape case against Bollywood actor Alok Nath, a rare development in the country’s burgeoning #MeToo movement, which has seen very few accusations investigated by the authorities.

Vinta Nanda, a writer and producer, has accused the veteran actor of raping her 19 years ago.

“Yesterday, Vinta Nanda visited Oshiwara police station (in Mumbai) and filed a complaint against Alok Nath,” said deputy commissioner Paramjit Singh Dahiya on Wednesday.

“Investigations are on and an FIR (first information report) has been filed under section 376 of the IPC (Indian Penal Code).”

In a Facebook post published last month, Nanda said she had been “brutalised and violated endlessly” by the popular star. She did not name him directly but dropped enough hints that others in the Hindi film industry to quickly identified him on Twitter.

U.S. Offensive Aerospace Capabilities Directed against the Whole Planet: America’s MUOS Satellite Communications System in Sicily

“The M5S (5 Star Movement) divided about the Sicilian maxi-radar”, headlined the Corriere della Sera, thereby spreading a maxi fake news – not about the directorate of the 5 Star Movement, which, after having won an electoral consensus with the “No MUOS” in Sicily, is now backing off – but about the very object of the dispute.

By defining the MUOS station in Niscemi as a “maxi-radar”, they are fooling public opinion into believing that it is an Earth-bound electronic scanning device, and therefore defensive. But on the contrary, the MUOS (Mobile User Objective System) is a new satellite communications system which extends the offensive capacity of the United States to the whole planet.

The system, developed by Lockheed Martin for the US Navy, is composed of an initial configuration of four satellites (plus one in reserve) in a geo-stationary orbit, and linked to four terrestrial stations – two in the United States (Hawaï and Virginia), one in Sicily and one in Australia. The four stations are linked by a network of terrestrial and submarine fibre-optic cables (the station in Niscemi is connected directly to the station in Virginia).

The MUOS, which is already in function, will become fully operational in the summer of 2019, attaining a capacity 16 times superior to that of the preceding systems. It will simultaneously transmit ultra-high frequency coded messages of vocal, video and data material. So submarines and warships, fighter-bombers and drones, military vehicles and on-the-ground units of the US and their allies, will thus be linked to a single command network of control and communications under the orders of the Pentagon, while they are operating anywhere in the world, including the polar regions.

Iraqi refugee accused of raping teenage daughter of German businessman who hired him

An Iraqi refugee is accused of raping a teenage girl in Germany, news outlet Rheinische Post (RP) online reports.

The 22-year-old rapist came in contact with the girl after her father hired him for a job. The father wanted to support Germany’s refugee community by helping them integrate into the labour market.

According to RP the young girl was raped after accompanying the refugee to his apartment. Her father trusted the man, but that was a terrible mistake.

After they drank alcohol with another man, the Iraqi raped the girl after the man left. The incident happened on 29 October. Immediately after the incident, the young woman went with her parents to the police and reported the rape.

“This is very dreadful. That was a person whom I trusted. “The event was horror for us,” the father said. He feels a great helplessness, “especially as it was a person who was so trusted.” The man’s teenage daughter has sleeping problems and suffers from panic attacks.
