It's pretty much true. I have musician friends that have opened for bands like Pantera, Slayer, Ozzy…but they don't get much of anywhere. One that talks about it said they make their bread and butter from the merch, everything else is record company.

To add, usually that's WITH grants and scholarships, without couldn't imagine how much moar they'd be indebted…my kid is in graduate school herself. She makes herself sick with worry having to pay it back. She got lots of scholarships and tons of grants. It is a racket.
