APD apologizes for meme misfire it said made light of domestic violence

ASHEVILLE — The police department issued an apology after posting an "unacceptable" Valentine's Day joke on social media, making light of domestic violence.

The joke came in the form of a meme — words superimposed over a themed picture — and was posted to the department's Facebook and Twitter pages. The meme features a picture of an enthusiastic, wide-eyed and smiling, young brunette woman. The name of the meme is Overly Attached Girlfriend, and it typically bears jokes along those lines.

The picture posted by the police department, contained the words "Restraining order? You can't restrain love."

The department wrote a short post to accompany the meme on social media.

"On behalf of the Asheville Police Department and its legal counsel, we wish you a pleasant #ValentinesDay in a manner that shall in no way be misconstrued as anything but informed and consensual."

APD has since removed the post from both Facebook and Twitter and used the social media platforms to apologize for having "inappropriately called attention to the issues of sexual assault and domestic violence."

"We recognize that this humor is unacceptable as it can validate an abuser and make the healing process for a survivor more difficult," the department wrote Thursday. "For those who saw our post yesterday, we sincerely apologize for any offense."

The same meme was also posted on the Facebook Page Cop Humor, which has more than 450,000 followers
