‘Kiev would get away even with eating babies’: Putin says Kerch Strait standoff is a provocation

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin said the clash between Russian and Ukrainian military ships was a result of foreign nation’s failing to hold Kiev accountable for bad behavior as long as it remains confrontational towards Russia.

The remarks were the first made by the Russian leader since the confrontation in the Kerch Strait, a narrow passageway between the Black Sea and the Azov Sea, where a strategic bridge connecting Crimea with mainland Russia is located.

“The authorities in Kiev are selling anti-Russian sentiment with quite a success today. They have nothing else to do,” Putin said during a business forum in Moscow.

The Russian president said it seemed like Kiev could get away with anything as far as foreign nations supporting Ukraine’s anti-Russian stance were concerned.

If they demand babies for breakfast, they would probably be served babies. They’d say: ‘Why not, they are hungry, what is to be done about it?’ This is such a shortsighted policy and it cannot have a good outcome. It makes the Ukrainian leadership complacent, gives them no incentive to do normal political work in their country or pursue a normal economic policy.

Putin said the incident, which ended in Russia’s seizure of three Ukrainian ships and Kiev imposing a partial martial law in the country, was a “dirty game” by Poroshenko, who needs to suppress his political opponents ahead of the March presidential election. He assured that the Ukrainian side was responsible for the escalation of tensions, since the incident was a deliberate and planned provocation by the Ukrainian Navy.

The Russian leader also defended the border guards, who stopped the Ukrainian ships from passing through the Kerch Strait, saying it was their duty as sworn service members to do so and that if they failed they could face a tribunal for defying an order.

US responsible for ‘misery & horrors’ forcing people to flee Latin America – Chomsky

As Donald Trump condones the use of tear gas against migrants at the Mexican border, linguistics icon Noam Chomsky says former US presidents are the ones who made conditions so bad in Latin America that people need to flee.

Speaking to Democracy Now, Chomsky blamed Washington for making things terrible enough that residents of certain Latin American countries feel they have no other choice but to try to leave for a better life. 

The renowned linguist and professor, who will turn 90 next month, noted that the bulk of the migrants in the caravan are from Honduras – and there’s a reason for that.

He explained that in 2009, a military coup ousted a “mildly reformist president” in Honduras and the Obama administration refused to condemn the move.

“A fraudulent election took place under the military junta – again, harshly condemned all over the hemisphere, most of the world, but not by the United States. The Obama administration praised Honduras for carrying out an election, moving towards democracy and so on.

“Now people are fleeing from the misery and horrors for which we are responsible,” Chomsky said.

The 89-year-old added that migrants from Guatemala and El Salvador also have reason to flee. Those countries, along with Honduras, have “been under harsh US domination, way back, but particularly since the 1980s.”

He went on to explain that there is an “incredible charade” taking place – “poor, miserable people” are fleeing from US-inflicted terror and repression, “and in reaction they’re sending thousands of troops to the border.”

Chomsky said the Trump administration has a “remarkable PR campaign”which is frightening much of the US into believing it is on the verge of an invasion by Middle Eastern terrorists who have made their way into the caravan.

The whole thing, he says, is reminiscent of a move made by former US president Ronald Reagan, who used fearful rhetoric in the mid-1980s when he was looking to gain support for guerillas fighting the Nicaraguan government.

More than 7,000 migrants are currently hoping to cross into America. Almost 6,000 of those are being housed at a sports complex in Tijuana, Mexico. Meanwhile, some 1,000 migrants attempted to storm the border fence near Tijuana on Sunday, after the border crossing was temporarily closed. Border patrol agents deployed tear gas, a move which Trump supported.

It was a “very minor form of the tear gas itself,” the US president saidduring a rally in Mississippi, adding that its use is “very safe.”
