Support from EPA chief

EPA chief criticizes climate report over ‘worst-case scenario’

Acting Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Andrew Wheeler joined others in the Trump administration Wednesday in criticizing last week’s major climate change report for describing a “worst-case scenario.”

At a Washington Post event, Wheeler said the report “was written in 2016, and was at the direction of the previous administration,” speculating that the Obama administration “told the report’s authors to take a look at the worst-case scenario for this report.”

“I think a lot of the worst-case scenario information in that assessment is what’s concerning a lot of people in this administration,” he said….

Under Obama Admin, Border Patrol Used Pepper Spray or Tear Gas More than 500 Times

….It turns out that the Obama Administration also used tear gas and pepper spray at the border, over 500 times from 2012-2016. However, liberals remained silent during that time.

According to numbers given to the Daily Caller by the Department of Homeland Security, tear gas was used by border agents 79 times between 2012 and 2016. Meanwhile, pepper spray was used 434 times between 2012 and 2016.

Both President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen defended Border Patrol’s use of tear gas.

“They were being rushed by some very tough people and they used tear gas,” said the President on Monday. “Here’s the bottom line: Nobody is coming into our country unless they come in legally.”….

The Department of Homeland Security revealed Tuesday that the threat of “fake families” declaring asylum together at the United States’ southern border is no joke; more than 150 illegal immigrant “families” have used non-familial children or adults to attempt to convince border patrol agents to allow them to remain in the country.

The Daily Caller reports that “there has been a 110 percent increase in male adults showing up at the border with children. Further, DHS separated 507 illegal immigrants between April 19 and September 30 because they fraudulently claimed they were part of a family unit.”

Customs and Border Patrol separated 170 “families” for being unable to prove any family relationship. In 139 of those cases, children were removed from the custody of unfamiliar adults. In other cases, “families” were separated after Border Patrol agents discovered that a person claiming to be a child was actually older than 18.

Google CEO To Testify Before Congress After Censoring Pro-Lifers and Conservatives

Google CEO Sundar Pichai will testify before the House Judiciary Committee on Dec. 5 to answer questions about the company’s possible political bias, the committee announced.

“Americans put their trust in big tech companies to honor freedom of speech and champion open dialogue, and it is Congress’ responsibility to the American people to make sure these tech giants are transparent and accountable in their practices,” committee chairman Rep. Bob Goodlatte, a Virginia Republican, said in a committee press release.

Republican lawmakers criticized Pichai for skipping a Sept. 5 Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on social media and foreign election meddling. Facebook and Twitter executives testified, and an empty chair with a nameplate that said “Google” sat where the company’s representative would have been.

The announcement of the social media-focused hearing comes as Google employees are making headlines for a Tuesday open letter protesting the company’s work on a censored Chinese search engine.

“Today the company accounts for nearly 90 percent of worldwide search traffic. … Unfortunately, recent reports suggest Google might not be wielding its vast power impartially,” committee member and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said in the press release….

THE KAVANAUGH EFFECT: Groups Ask SCOTUS To Hear Case That Could Overturn Roe

A group of organizations have called on the Supreme Court to hear a case that could trigger the court to overturn the infamous Roe v. Wade case that legalized abortion.

The group comprised of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, National Association of Evangelicals, Concerned Women for America, National Legal Foundation and Pacific Justice Institute, filed a brief on November 15 with the Court asking the justices to review an Indiana case which blocked enforcement of a law signed by then-Governor Mike Pence in 2016 that required doctors to inform their patients that abortions were not permitted because of the unborn baby’s “race, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, or diagnosis or potential diagnosis of the fetus having Down syndrome or any other disability.” The justices could decide to overturn Roe and the 1992 Planned Parenthood v. Casey opinion that reaffirmed Roe. Justice Anthony Kennedy, who was replaced by Justice Brett Kavanaugh, voted to side with Planned Parenthood in 1992.

After Pence signed the law, Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky challenged it; a federal judge permanently blocked the state from enforcing it, as the Baptist Press reports. In April 2018, a three-judge panel of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago agreed with the federal judge. Judge William Bauer, writing for the court, noted that Roe recognized a right to privacy “broad enough to encompass a woman’s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy,” that “this right is not unqualified,” and that it must be balanced “against important state interests in regulation.”

FDA approves two cancer treatments after expedited reviews

The US Food and Drug Administration approved two cancer treatments, Vitrakvi and Xospata, this week after expedited reviews.

Vitrakvi, approved Monday, is "a treatment for adult and pediatric patients whose cancers have a specific genetic feature (biomarker)."

The FDA said in a statement that it is the second approved cancer treatment that is based on a tumor biomarker instead of the place in the body where the tumor originated.

Vitrakvi will be used for the treatment of solid tumors that have an NTRK (neurotrophic receptor tyrosine kinase) gene fusion that do not have a known resistance mutation, that are not metastatic or where surgical removal is likely to lead to severe morbidity, and that have no alternative treatments or have progressed after treatments.

NTRK genes are rare but occur in many types of cancer, the FDA said, such as mammary analogue secretory carcinoma and infantile fibrosarcoma.

Xospata tablets, approved Wednesday, are for the "treatment of adult patients who have relapsed or refractory acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with a FLT3 mutation," according to the FDA.

Alongside the tablets, the agency also approved a diagnostic to detect the mutation.

"Approximately 25 to 30 percent of patients with AML have a mutation in the FLT3 gene. These mutations are associated with a particularly aggressive form of the disease and a higher risk of relapse," Dr. Richard Pazdur, director of the FDA's Oncology Center of Excellence, said in the statement.

AML is a rapidly progressing cancer that affects the numbers of normal blood cells and calls for continuous transfusions, the FDA said.

Both treatments were granted Priority Review designation.
