On this day in 1961, the U.S. figure skating team was headed to the World Championships in Prague. They never made it.
On Feb. 15, 1961, the 18-member team was killed in a plane crash in Berg-Kampenhout, Belgium, on their way to Prague. The tragedy devastated the country and the world of figure skating.
No one on the plane survived. Sixteen coaches, officials and family members, including Owen’s sister, Maribel, and her mother, Maribel Vinson-Owen, a nine-time U.S. ladies’ champion and 1932 Olympic bronze medalist, also died in the accident, as did 38 passengers and crew members.
The day after the crash, newly inaugurated President John F. Kennedy expressed his condolences in a statement, ESPN.com’s Ford writes. The International Skating Union canceled the world championship.

Less then a month after Kennedy was innagurated. ( Maybe a warning shot across the bough?) A message to him,, don't mess with our plan? Given how they are today,, in how they threaten Trump, or try to send him a message,, it seems like that was the same reasoning behind this incident( 1 a warning to Kennedy, 2 people on board they wanted dead( or in general a sacrifice, to go with warning) 3. Maybe as a show of strength?
I don't remember this plane crash being discussed that often at all during the past 50 years.

Bill Haas was injured in a fatal rollover car crash Tuesday night in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Haas, who was set to compete in this week’s Genesis Open at nearby Riviera Country Club, was a passenger in an older model Ferrari traveling south near the 500 block of Chautauqua Boulevard when it collided around 6:30 p.m. PT with a northbound BMW.
A Los Angeles Fire Department report said the Ferrari driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Golf Channel reported Wednesday that the driver was identified as 71-year-old Mark William Gibello, a Pacific Palisades resident with whom Haas and his family were staying this week.
Gibello was executive vice president and director of TCW Asset Management Company. According to Golf Channel, Gibello was friends with Haas’ swing coach, Billy Harmon, and was instrumental in bringing the 2017 Walker Cup and 2023 U.S. Open to Los Angeles Country Club, where Gibello was a member.
