Google Internally Divided over Censored Chinese Search App ‘Project Dragonfly’

https://www.breitbart.com/tech/2018/11/29/google-internally-divided-over-censored-chinese-search-app-project-dragonfly/

Employees at Google have reportedly begun fighting amongst themselves over the company’s plans to develop a government-censored Chinese search engine, codenamed “Project Dragonfly.” Many employees are reportedly in favor of working with the communist regime.

The Verge reports that employees working for tech giant Google are divided over the company’s plans to launch a government-censored Chinese search engine, codenamed “Project Dragonfly.” Anger over the project has been previously reported on by Breitbart News, as many as 1,400 employees have already signed an internal petition requesting more information about the project while a smaller group of 400 employees have recently urged Google to abandon the project in an open letter published to Medium.com.

”Dragonfly would also enable censorship and government-directed disinformation, and destabilize the ground truth on which popular deliberation and dissent rely,” the employees wrote in the letter. “Given the Chinese government’s reported suppression of dissident voices, such controls would likely be used to silence marginalized people, and favor information that promotes government interests.”

Facebook Considered Offering Big Advertisers Access to User Data

https://www.breitbart.com/tech/2018/11/29/report-facebook-considered-offering-big-advertisers-access-to-user-data/

According to internal Facebook emails revealed by the Wall Street Journal, the social media giant considered cutting deals with third party companies in order to provide them with access to Facebook user data.

According to internal Facebook emails review by the Wall Street Journal, the social media firm discussed cutting deals with companies in exchange for access to the personal data of two billion Facebook users. The emails were secured as part of a lawsuit brought against the firm in California by the app startup Six4Three which alleges that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg developed a “malicious and fraudulent scheme” to take advantage of Facebook users’ personal data and force other rival companies out of business. Emails obtained from the lawsuit appear to show Facebook executives discussing the idea of pushing advertisers to spend more in order to gain access to further profile information on Facebook users.

The report claims that in one email, an unnamed Facebook employee suggested shutting down companies’ access to data “in one-go to all apps that don’t spend… at least $250k a year to maintain access to the data.” In another email, the idea of settling a trademark issue with the Match Group over the popular dating app Tinder by giving the company continued access to Facebook data was discussed. This matter has since been settled but not in exchange for user data according to the companies.

Trump: If You Don’t Want to Pay Tariffs, Build in the U.S.A

https://www.breitbart.com/economy/2018/11/29/trump-if-you-dont-want-to-pay-tariffs-build-in-the-u-s-a/

Trump’s remarks make it clear that his trade policy does not resemble the “protectionism” often maligned by economists. Critics often describe protectionist tariffs as protecting U.S. companies from international competition. Indeed, much of the gains economists expect from trade arise in their theoretical models from competition.

But Trump’s tariffs do not reduce competition. Indeed, they increase competition for labor in the U.S. by incentivizing companies to locate production of goods here. Domestic companies still have to compete with foreign rivals but this takes place while both employ U.S. workers.
