I'm trying to find an article from many years back describing conditions inside a Chinese test-prep factory where students cram for national exams, the only criteria for university admission.

NYTimes has the article but I can't get it.

What I'm trying to find is the description of students "praying to Mao" and climbing up the stairs on their bleeding knees praying to Mao. Can't find it, but darned if I don't recall reading that article some years ago.

This looks like the same article but maybe it's been pruned for length.
