Newfag here… lurking since July-ish. Honestly not sure if this point has been addressed.

Not a lawfag… but having seen publicly available criminal indictments, it would seem:

  1. A single indictment can include more than one charge.

  2. A single indictment can charge more than one person.

Therefore, we can expect that the indictment count in the monthly Pacer list is not commensurate with the number of people or charges in the indictments.

Again, I am not a lawfag… but the "sealed indictments" list specifically indicates the numbers are "sealed court proceedings" at the bottom.

My understanding is sealed court proceedings can include indictments, but it also includes evidence requests, search warrants, pleas, case logs, witness testimony, sentencing orders, etc. In truth, it seems we may not know how many of those "proceedings" are actually indictments.

TL;DR - The "sealed indictment" count may not reflect an accurate number of sealed criminal charges or people charged with crimes.

Interested to hear a lawfag's take.

Thanks, makes sense.

I'm also interested to know if there Pacer indicates the "sealed court proceedings" are actually indictments or if they're other normal court business, but sealed.
