re: GM plant in Chongqing

Part of GM's stated rationale for closing plants in Canada and U.S. now is repositioning itself to be a leader in electric and autonomous technology, or some sort of other similar corporatespeak.

But that doesn't make sense. If they're shifting their attention to a different type of vehicle, why not just re-tool existing plants where they already have the infrastructure built and the people trained, instead of abandoning that and angering the community? (Especially given the government bailouts that they got several years ago to keep those plants open.)

Is this Chongqing plant related? Is it operational and did they ever "disclose what vehicles will be built there?" I have to wonder if the "electric and autonomous vehicle initiative" is to be run out of there and if there is a reason (Clown control? lack of scrutiny? etc.)

Have to go workfag so no time to dig, but a DDG search for "General Motors" chongqing might be fruitful.
