The Sheriff’s Foundation Medallion is awarded by the Foundation’s Board of Directors to recognize an individual’s contribution to the mission of the Foundation. SWAT Sergeant Matthew Patten has served BSO and Broward County for over 24 years and provided invaluable training to the members of Class 1 of the Sheriff’s Foundation Academy and Classroom during a recent BSO/SWAT Anti-terrorism training exercise. SGT Patten’s meritorious efforts advanced 3 of the 4 pillars of the Foundation’s mission: Anti-Terrorism, Training, and Civic Education.

BSO Conducting Anti-Terrorism Training To Stay Sharp

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) – A simulated crisis unfolded Thursday afternoon at the Broward Sheriff’s Office designed to test the skills of the BSO SWAT Team.

 

The scenario — a gang of anti-government bad guys infiltrated the Public Safety Complex.

 

Their aim — take over BSO’s communications center.

 

Within minutes, BSO’s SWAT Team sprang into action.

 

It was all part of a domestic terrorism training exercise, one of several BSO’s SWAT team performs throughout the year.

 

CBS 4 News cameras rolled as the SWAT team landed on the roof of the building. SWAT members gathered in the stairwell, preparing to confront the bad guys.

 

Gunfire (actually paint pellets) broke out and the SWAT Team took out the gang. In the exchange, three SWAT members were hit but the team was able to prevent the communications center from being overrun.

 

It is the type of drill that has become more commonplace for BSO since the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

 

In fact, says BSO Lt. Greg Lees, 9/11 changed the way the agency trains.

 

“(Before 9/11) we weren’t as concerned about IED’s,” he said. “We weren’t concerned about chem-bio threats. We weren’t concerned about a full scale terrorist attack but those things are definitely the things we’re doing now.”

 

Lees said Thursday’s scenario was patterned after the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India in 2008. In those attacks, several buildings — including a hotel — were the scenes of the assault.

 

Lees said Thursday’s exercise went well but there were mistakes. That’s the way the drill was designed.

 

“The scenario was made very difficult to handle,” Lees said.

 

Sgt. Matt Patten says it was coincidental that this exercise occurred just days before the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

 

“It couldn’t have been a more opportune time for us to do it and that’s why we’re doing it,” Patten said. “We’ve got to protect ourselves and the citizens of Broward County.”

Vice President Mike Pence arrived at Fort-Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport just after noon on Friday. He was greeted by a Broward Sheriff's Office SWAT team that included one cop in a #QAnon conspiracy-theory patch. #QAnon is, of course, the batshit-insane, 4Chan-based conspiracy theory that claims Donald Trump is secretly fighting a war with Special Counsel Robert Mueller to capture a secret, elite pedophile ring that includes prominent celebrities and Democratic politicians, including Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. The theory seems to have come from a group of online con-artists, according to one NBC News investigation.

 

So it's definitely troubling that an armed BSO SWAT officer hung out with the vice president while wearing a QAnon patch. Jared Holt, a reporter with RightWingWatch, first noticed the photo, which Pence tweeted from his official account. Holt was able to find the same patch for sale on Amazon. The patch says "Question the Narrative."

Spokespeople for BSO did not immediately respond to a message from New Times. But the sheriff's office provides security at the airport, and the cops in question can be seen wearing BSO patches. The man's nametag in the photograph identifies him as BSO Sgt. Matt Patten.

 

There are serious questions about whether a cop should be able to keep his or her job after professing belief in a theory like QAnon. Simply put: QAnon is painfully stupid. The theory is based around an anonymous 4Chan user who claims to have top-level government security clearances. The poster has never provided evidence to prove this. There is instead evidence that the "QAnon" 4Chan account has been used by multiple people.
