Well if it is in area not prone to earthquakes people may not immediately think it's one. During the East Coast/USA earthquake of August 2011, I "heard," moreso than felt, the earthquake coming from underneath the floorboards (cellar) while working on my computer. It sounded like a monstrous machine. For a split second I wondered if road work was being done on my quiet street. This was in a 200 year old structure --very solid. In the next second, I looked up to see my dog bolting down the staircase and the staircase was swaying. It was only when I saw his face which read, "it's an earthquake and I'm getting outta here" that it registered in my brain and I followed him right out the front door. My next door neighbors had come outside too -- one looked very angry that her day had been disturbed and the other was maxed out crying. Me and my dog were just like, "Um, earthquake."
