GrayzoneProject — Barack Obama urged bankers to thank him for helping make them so much money during his tenure as president. He also boasted of turning the US into the world’s largest oil producer.

Obama made his appeals for elite adulation at a lavish gala hosted by former Secretary of State James Baker and surrounded by wealthy Republicans in tuxedos.

His comments came just a few hours after he met with former Republican President George H. W. Bush at his home in Texas.

If there was any single event that captured Obama’s centrist, neoliberal capitalist politics, it was the former Democratic president’s oligarch lovefest in Houston on November 27.

At this sumptuous black-tie gala, Obama talked the 1,100 elite guests into raising a staggering $5.4 million, in just one night (at an average donation of nearly $5,000), for Rice University’s centrist, pro-corporate Baker Institute for Public Policy, which is chaired by Baker.

Baker joked that Obama would be getting paid ten percent of the $5.4 million in donations. It is unclear how much Obama raked in for his speech, but Baker’s exaggeration might not have been far off.

After begging for the gratitude of the ultra-rich, Obama and Baker rattled off a series of platitudes about the importance of “bipartisanship.” The Baker Institute described the event as a discussion of “political civility.”

The two did not once mention the name of President Donald Trump in their more than 30-minute discussion.

North Korea media: Kim Yong Nam signs agreements in Venezuela

Nov. 30 (UPI) – North Korea's titular head of state has met with socialist Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Korean Workers' Party newspaper Rodong Sinmun reported Friday that President of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly Kim Yong Nam met with Maduro in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas on Tuesday and signed agreements.

"North Korea and Venezuela diplomats concluded memoranda of understanding and agreements," the Rodong stated, without elaborating on the details.

The paper also said Kim Yong Nam delivered a message from leader Kim Jong Un, as well as "gifts."

Prominent academic and author Dr Michel Chossudovsky warned that the so-called war on terrorism is a front to propagate America’s global hegemony and create a New World Order.

Dr Chossudovsky said terrorism is made in the US and that terrorists are not the product of the Muslim world.

According to him, the US global war on terrorism was used to enact anti-terrorism laws that demonised Muslims in the Western world and created Islamophobia.

Elaborating on his argument, Dr Chossudovsky said that NATO was responsible for recruiting members of the Islamic state while Israel is funding “global jihad elements inside Syria”.

Dr Chossudovsky, who is also the founder of the Centre for Research and Globalisation, further emphasised that the global war on terrorism is a fabrication, a big lie and a crime against humanity.

Echoing Dr Chossudovsky’s arguments, Malaysia’s prominent political scientist, Islamic reformist and activist Dr Chandra Muzaffar said that the US has always manipulated religion to further its global hegemony on sovereign states.

G-20 nations agree on reforming WTO: European officials

BUENOS AIRES (REUTERS) - European officials said that G-20 nations had agreed to commit to reforming the World Trade Organisation in a preliminary draft of the communique due to be released at the end of a two-day meeting of the bloc on Saturday (Dec 1).

An EU official said the language currently being negotiated for the communique said leaders support reforms needed to improve the WTO.

The language on multilateral trade had been a sticking point for the United States, which insisted the communique say the multilateral trading system was not working, the official added.

"We reiterate that trade is beneficial for utility, innovation, growth and employment, and we reiterate that the multilateral trading system is the framework in which we are all working and committed," the official said.

"But for the US to acknowledge that, they had to get something in return, which was to say that this multilateral trading system does not work anymore, and does not meet the challenges that it has to meet," the official added.

Citing Russia threat, Ukraine boosts security at ports, power plants

KIEV (Reuters) - Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on Saturday his country had stepped up security at vital infrastructure sites such as nuclear power stations and Black Sea ports in the face of what he called a Russian test of the world order.

Russia opened fire on and seized three Ukrainian navy ships and their crews on Nov. 25 in an incident which Moscow and Kiev have blamed on each other, triggering a crisis that has raised fears of a wider conflict.

Poroshenko on Saturday repeated allegations that Russia had amassed a large military force in eastern Ukraine, which is controlled by pro-Russian separatists, and in Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014.

British Science Minister quits over Theresa May's Brexit deal; May says UK will not use EU’s Galileo for defence

LONDON (REUTERS) - British science and universities minister Sam Gyimah quit Prime Minister Theresa May's government on Friday (Nov 30), the sixth minister to resign in protest against her proposed Brexit deal with the European Union.

Gyimah, a junior-ranking minister who campaigned in the 2016 vote to keep Britain in the EU, said May's deal meant Britain would surrender its "voice and its veto" and that the Prime Minister should not rule out the prospect of a second referendum.

His resignation represents a further blow to May, who is trying to persuade her own lawmakers to approve the deal she struck with Brussels on Sunday.

May faces criticism from all sides including the Northern Irish party propping up her government, ahead of Britain's departure from the EU in four months.

UC-Berkeley student gov unanimously approves resolution to fund migrant caravan

The University of California Berkeley student government has resolved to financially support the Honduran migrant caravan after a four-hour meeting Wednesday evening, during which senators were told that voting against the funding would be “violent."

The resolution passed Wednesday night was presented by the Associated Students of the University of California. Among other initiatives, the bill titled In Support of Central American Refugees in their Pursuit of Asylum proposed that the student government allocate $1500 to be donated to a non-profit organization with the intent of helping to fund the caravan.

The bill specifically referenced the Honduran migrant caravan, acknowledging that "while some have gradually arrived to the US-Mexico border, thousands are still en route and should arrive in the next week or two,” and calling on the student government to “be in solidarity” with these individuals.
