Broward Supervisor of Elections Dr. Brenda Snipes announced Saturday she will fight her suspension by the governor, and rescinded her letter of resignation that preceded it.

Gov. Rick Scott suspended Snipes late Friday afternoon, citing “widespread issues with voting” in Broward County.

In a room filled with black pastors, elected officials, community leaders and her fellow “Deltas” sorority sisters in their trademark red clothing, Snipes thanked her supporters Saturday and asked everyone to keep an open mind.

“We’ve made lots of achievements, accomplishments and have always done our work in an air of quality and integrity,” Snipes said.

US Fifth Fleet commander found dead in Bahrain

Vice Adm. Scott Stearney, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and the U.S. Fifth Fleet, was found dead Saturday in his residence in Bahrain, U.S. military officials said.

No foul play is suspected, but the cause of death remained under investigation, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson said.

Defense Department sources told CBS News the death was "an apparent suicide."

He oversaw U.S. naval operations in the Middle East and Southwest Asia, including safeguarding the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, the New York Times reported.

Stearney’s Fifth Fleet duties are being assumed by Rear Adm. Paul Schlise, the fleet’s deputy commander.

The Fifth Fleet includes the Arabian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, the Gulf of Aden, the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) and the Bahraini Ministry of Interior are in charge of the investigation.

Almost $11,000 a month. That’s what Brenda Snipes will be receiving in pension benefits when she resigns in January as the Broward County Supervisor of Elections.

The state pensions include $58,560 a year she’s already receiving from her earlier career as an educator, and she’ll be adding almost $71,000 a year for her time in elected office.

It's that last amount - the $71k - that she loses if suspended. That's what the suspension could cost her.
