QAnon is a pro-President Donald Trump deep-state conspiracy theory that incorporates everything from "Pizzagate" to "false flag" mass shootings to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. It has claimed, for example, that Trump is not under investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller but is instead working with him to go after leading Democrats and other political figures, whom proponents of the theory allege are involved in pedophilia rings. It has been described as a "counter-narrative" to the actual reality of Trump's presidency.

The QAnon conspiracy emerged on messaging board 4Chan, where a poster claiming to be “Q,” a senior federal government figure, last year started publishing a series of cryptic “clues.”

Supporters have spun an elaborate narrative out of the clues, claiming they show that President Donald Trump is poised to take down a child trafficking ring involving senior Democrats and Hollywood figures.

In recent months backers of the conspiracy have appeared at Trump rallies, holding up banners and wearing clothing referencing the conspiracy theory. Actor and Trump backer Roseanne Barr is among the high profile adherents of Q Anon.

QAnon is an online movement of conspiracy theorists who believe that President Donald Trump is in the process of bringing down a pedophile ring that is led by Hillary Clinton and other Democrats. The group came to prominence thanks to their presence at Trump rallies during the summer of 2018. In August 2018, a major QAnon supporter got a photo with the president in the Oval Office. The believers of QAnon say that an anonymous person with high-level security clearance named Q began the movement through postings on 4Chan about Trump and his belief in a Democrat-led child abuse conspiracy.

Vice President Mike Pence tweeted, and soon deleted, a photo on Friday showing him with a police officer who wore a patch with a “Q” patch, signaling belief in the QAnon conspiracy, prominently displayed on his uniform. QAnon is an internet-based baseless anti-government conspiracy theory that has been pushing the lie that President Donald Trump is in cahoots with military officials to target members of what they consider to be the government’s “deep state,” who they believe run pedophile rings.

The conspiracy theory started on internet message board 4Chan with mysterious, cryptic posts by a person known as “Q,” who followers believe to be a highly-placed government official. QAnon is responsible for, among others, the absurd Pizzagate conspiracy theory, which led to a shooting inside a Washington, DC, pizzeria in December 2016. The suspect, a follower of QAnon, fired three shots with an AR-15, although no one was injured; he was sentenced to four years in prison. The assailant said he was attempting to save children trapped in a sex-slave ring, which he believed to be led by Hillary Clinton and her campaign advisor, John Podesta.

Followers of QAnon believe Trump is on a mission to rid the government of these pedophiles, and supporters have been seen at Trump rallies with shirts and signs with the letter “Q” on them, a signal they subscribe to the conspiracy.

An official at the Vice President’s Office

told BuzzFeed News the image was deleted from Pence’s account after the patch was pointed out to staff. The official added that the image was taken down so as not to draw attention to the baseless conspiracy theory.
