Former Justice Dept worker pleads guilty over lying about lobbying related to 1MDB scandal

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A former Justice Department employee on Friday pleaded guilty to conspiring to deceive U.S. banks about millions of dollars in foreign lobbying funds, after he facilitated financing a lobbying campaign related to the U.S. investigation into the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.

The Justice Department said in a statement that the alleged architect of the 1MDB scheme had hired George Higginbotham, who was then a senior congressional affairs specialist at the Justice Department, to help transfer tens of millions of dollars from foreign bank accounts to the United States. Higginbotham said he had conspired to make false statements to banks about the source and purpose of the funds and also deceived banks with fake loan and consulting documents.

House race in limbo after North Carolina voter fraud claims

November 30, 2018 - by admin

Harris edged Democrat Dan McCready by 905 votes in the Nov. 6 congressional election. But the validity of hundreds of mail-in absentee ballots from a rural county has been called into question, the elections board said on Twitter.

The board voted 7-2 to hold a hearing due “to claims of numerous irregularities and concerted fraudulent activities related to absentee mail ballots,” Joshua Malcolm, vice chairman of the board of elections, said in a recorded session on Friday.

Thousands in Georgia declare ‘stolen election’, urge snap polls

Around 25,000 Georgians protested on Sunday against the election of a ruling party-backed candidate to the presidency and demanded snap parliamentary polls in a move that threatens to complicate the transition of power in the Western-backed nation.

Holding Georgian, EU and US flags, protesters made claims about vote-buying and other irregularities as they packed Rustaveli Avenue in front of parliament in the centre of the capital Tbilisi.

The former pro-West president Mikheil Saakashvili addressed the huge crowd by video link from Amsterdam, where he lives in self-imposed exile.

“Misha! Misha!” chanted supporters as the 50-year-old politician appeared on a big screen.

“Georgia’s future is being born on this square today,” said Saakashvili, who is accused by the authorities of abuse of power. “We will fight peacefully but we will never give up.”

BREAKING News Out Of Maryland- Authorities Make The Biggest BUST Of The Year

Baltimore, Maryland – U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake sentenced Ryan Farace, age 34, of Reisterstown, Maryland, today to 57 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for drug distribution and money laundering conspiracies.

The charges arose from a scheme to manufacture and distribute alprazolam tablets, which are typically sold under the brand name “Xanax,” through sales on the dark web in exchange for Bitcoin. Farace and his co-conspirator, Robert Swain, laundered the drug proceeds through financial transactions designed to conceal the source and ownership of the illegal funds. Judge Blake ordered that Farace must forfeit a money judgment equal to $5,665,000 and 4,000 Bitcoin.

Farace was also ordered to forfeit assets seized by law enforcement during the execution of search warrants on January 16, 2018, at locations associated with the conspiracies, including approximately $1.5 million in cash, 1.100 bitcoin and approximately $2.5 million in computer equipment. Robert Swain, age 34, of Freeland, Maryland, previously pleaded guilty to the money laundering conspiracy and faces a maximum of 20 years in prison at his sentencing on January 25, 2019.

Christians on brink of extinction in Middle East, warns Archbishop of Canterbury

Christians who were the first founders of the church are on brink of “imminent extinction”, the Archbishop of Canterbury is warning.

Describing the “daily threat of murder” faced in the Middle East, the Most Reverend Justin Welby says Christians are experiencing “the worst situation since the Mongol invasions of the 13th Century”.

Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, Archbishop Welby, the most senior clergyman in the Church of England, calls on the Government to take in more refugees.

It comes as figures have revealed just one in 400 Syrian refugees given asylum in the UK last year were Christians despite them being subjected to “horrendous persecution”.
