Mexico new president vows to end 'rapacious' elite in first speech

MEXICO CITY, Dec 1 (Reuters) - Veteran leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took office as Mexican president on Saturday, vowing to see off a "rapacious" elite in a country struggling with corruption, chronic poverty and gang violence on the doorstep of the United States.

Backed by a gigantic Mexican flag, the 65-year-old took the oath of office in the lower house of Congress, pledging to bring about a "radical" rebirth of Mexico to overturn what he called a disastrous legacy of decades of "neo-liberal" governments.

"The government will no longer be a committee at the service of a rapacious minority," said the new president, who is often nicknamed AMLO. Nor would the government, he said, be a "simple facilitator of pillaging, as it has been." Lopez Obrador later addressed a massive crowd of supporters in the heart of the capital, promising to put Mexico's sizeable indigenous minority first in his drive to root out inequality.

A major challenge facing the new leader is managing relations with Mexico's top trading partner, the United States, after repeated broadsides by President Donald Trump against Mexico over illegal immigrants crossing the U.S. border.

Lopez Obrador repeated he was seeking to contain migration through a deal with Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to foster development in Central America and Mexico.

The first leftist to take office in Mexico in a generation also tried to reassure business after markets slumped since the July 1 election on worries about his policies, including the abrupt cancellation of a $13 billion new Mexico City airport.

Lopez Obrador reiterated investments in the country of 130 million people would be safe, and pledged to respect central bank independence. Saying his government would make savings by stopping losses from the public purse into the "sewer of corruption," he promised not to raise national debt or taxes.

But he promised higher wages for the poor and zero tolerance for corruption in his administration.

And in a reference to one of his heroes, the 19th-century Mexican President Benito Juarez, who separated the church and the state, Lopez Obrador said his government would ensure a divide between economic and political power in the country.

Making 16 references to "neo-liberal" policies in his speech, he vowed to abolish the "regime" he said it had created.

He blamed the government of his predecessor, Enrique Pena Nieto, for causing a plunge in oil output by opening the energy industry in Latin America's no. 2 economy to private investment.

Instead, he vowed to ramp up public investment to rescue state oil company Pemex, which is suffering from heavy debts.

Mexico's Foreign Minister In U.S. For Talks With Trump Administration

As the influx of migrants into Mexico begin clashing with the nation's populace, more and more Mexicans are against these roving caravans of illegal immigrants who fought their way into their country. Now that Mexico is feeling the pain, as well as the US, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said he arrived in Washington to meet with Mike Pompeo, Trump's Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Immigration has been a thorn in the side of the last several presidents since the U.S. does not have a fully constructed, manned wall at its southern border. This means drugs and human traffickers are allowed to freely enter in and out of the country. President Trump has vowed to bring a stop to the mass migration of illegals which was welcomed by President Obama.

Reddit is replacing community mods with a Chinese style communism points system. No joke.

What could ever go wrong?

via Reddit:

Greetings, r/Libertarian!

I want to let you know about an experiment we’re launching in r/Libertarian today. It’s a governance tool based on reputation, as a more federated way to make community decisions.

Introducing… Community Points and Polls!

The magic of Reddit happens when users have the space and control to be creative. Reddit is a canvas they feel is their own, and it’s this sense of ownership that results in the explosion of creativity we see everyday. Polls and Community Points are new tools for creative control, allowing you all to have a voice in making important governance decisions in your community.

How will it work?

Users earn points for contributing to r/Libertarian through posting, commenting, and moderating. Each week, you earn points for contributions you made in the previous week.

Everyone in r/Libertarian now has the ability to create and vote on governance polls (yay!). This feature is primarily available on redesign. Old web and mobile apps users can still view and vote on polls.

What can you do with points?

Votes on polls will be weighted based on how many points you have. This is so that active contributors have a say in governance decisions proportional to their contributions to the subreddit. You don’t spend points for voting, and you can see both the weighted and unweighted results (i.e., the number of votes for each option) by changing the view here.

How are points distributed?

Today, 100M points are awarded based on contributions since the beginning of time. Each week, an additional 2M points will be distributed.

This is the breakdown for the initial distribution today:

80% of the points will go to contributors (split based on post and comment karma earned)

20% of the points will go to a community fund (for us & moderators to use for things like contests, new features, and the people who claim their points)

Strange Seismic Waves Rocked The Globe Nov. 11, Here’s What Happened

On November 11, mysterious seismic waves caused a rumble in the Indian Ocean that reverberated around the globe. Low-frequency waves shook the entire Earth for about 20 minutes that day, but scientists now believe they know what caused that strange phenomenon.

Researches have declared that they don’t think any large earthquake was responsible for the worldwide rumblings. Instead, they feel that an eruption of an underwater volcano was to blame. Well, according to scientists, it was “almost certainly” an underwater volcano, anyway…

The rumble, which was described as a monotone ring, was picked up by seismographs almost 11,000 miles (18,000 km) from Mayotte and were spotted by happenstance. A New Zealand based Earthquake enthusiast who goes by the handle @matarikipax noticed unusual seismology readings from the United States Geological Survey. The agency publishes all of its recordings for free online, allowing anyone across the globe to trawl through its data. “This is a most odd and unusual seismic signal. Recorded at Kilima Mbogo, Kenya,” @matarikipax wrote on Twitter on November 11. “The signal can be seen all around the world.”

According to The Daily Mail, a low-rumbling that could not be felt above ground was detected on November 11 and narrowed down the origin to a region just off the coast of the island of Mayotte. One scientist who has studied the charts told MailOnline that the trembling was almost certainly caused by a low-level underwater volcanic eruption off the northeast of Mayotte.

Anthony Lomax, an independent seismology consultant, said that “There has been ongoing low-level seismic activity there since May,” he told MailOnline.“‘Inflation/deflation and collapse of volcano calderas and movement of magma under a volcano can produce a wide variety of seismic signals, including long period and repetitive waves like those observed November 11.”

University of Plymouth Geology Graduate and founder of the United Kingdom Earthquake Bulletin, Jamie Gurney, said he had “no idea if a similar global signal of this nature has ever been observed.”

Scientists are working to understand what spurred the mysterious waves on that day. So far, many suspect they’re related to an ongoing seismic swarm in the region that began last May.
