kevlar can help - far better than nothing. if loose, it'll take a lot of the shock and prevent the projectile from going as deep - it'll pull the kevlar in the hole with it.

if against a hard surface, it wouldn't do much against 223 unless it was many layers thick.

good kevlar body armor won't stop most rifle rounds but it does take some of the kinetic energy out of the hits and distributes the pressure.
