Two interesting objectives and consequences of celibacy are:
1) upon the death of a celibate official of the Church, all their worldly possessions revert to the Church itself rather than to a spouse or other family. This is by design and is one of the ways the Catholic Church has become fabulously wealthy.
2) there is a fairly widely held belief that homosexual activity does not count as breach of celibacy doctrine, hence it is quite widely spread amoungst the clergy. (A similar phenomenon can be observed in prisons and even single sex schools to some extent. Otherwise heterosexual individuals will often engage in homosexuality when no other option is available)
