Israeli police recommend bribery charges against Benjamin Netanyahu

Police in Israel on Sunday recommended Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife, Sara Netanyahu, should be indicted on charges of fraud and bribery.

Netanyahu is alleged to have traded favors to a telecommunications company in exchange for positive coverage.

Israel’s attorney general will decide whether to bring charges against Netanyahu related to this investigation and two others. This year alone, police have recommended three times the prime minister face criminal prosecution, the New York Times reports.

In response to the latest allegations against him, Netanyahu said in a tweet the recommendations by the police “were determined and leaked even before the investigations began.”

“I’m sure that in this case the relevant authorities, after examining the issue, will reach the same conclusion: that there was nothing because there is nothing,” Netanyahu said.

Police said there was enough evidence to indict Benjamin and Sara Netanyahu for bribery and fraud related to alleged interference in regulatory decisions related to Bezeq, the telecommunications firm. In exchange for their involvement, Netanyahu and his wife allegedly received favorable coverage from a news website owned by Bezeq.

Netanyahu joked about the criminal investigations in a Hanukkah video posted to his Twitter account Sunday.

In the video, Netanyahu interacts with a customer at a bakery complaining about waiting in line for sufganiyot, jelly doughnuts.

“I call them all the time asking for takeaway,” Netanyahu says. “They don’t believe me and they think I’m pulling one over on them so they call the cops on me.”

“Case 5000,” the customer replies.

“Forget it,” the prime minister says. “Who’s counting anyway?”

The investigation involving the alleged enrichment of Bezeq is known as Case 4000.
