Anti-migration party Vox wins big in Spain as Europe’s populist wave continues

Populist party Vox in Spain has gained 12 parliamentary seats in the regional election of Andalusia. For the first time in DECADES, a right-wing party, has won seats in Andalusia on Sunday. The Vox party won 12 seats which surpassed the five seats predicted.

Vox are tough on immigration and since being founded in 2014, have been called far-right, populist, anti-immigrant and anti-Islam.

The party’s leader, Santiago Abascal thinks its recent increase in support is because it is “in step with what millions of Spaniards think”.

The Socialist Party has ruled Andalusia for 36 years and winning 33 seats on Sunday were still the leading party.

However, they fell short of a majority, which means that the conservative Popular Party (PP), having come in second, could potentially form a coalition in the region with Vox and the centre-right Citizens party. The three parties hold a majority of seats.

Hungary warns EU that migrant visas will cause large masses to come into Europe

The European Parliament holding another vote on “migrant visas” is “unacceptable”, the head of the Prime Minister’s Office said on Wednesday, and called the procedure “anti-democratic”.

Gergely Gulyas insisted that the proposal, which has been once rejected, would be put to vote “without any real changes” and added that its proponents would “keep on trying until they get the right answer”.

Gulyas warned that large masses could come into Europe by way of the proposed travel documents, while “Europe and other countries make huge efforts to protect the external borders”.

Europe should be composed of strong sovereign nation states – Hungarian Foreign Minister

Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, in a lecture at the University of Bonn on Monday, argued for a strong Europe composed of strong nation states.

“If there is any country that needs a strong Europe, it is definitely Hungary,” he said, noting that Hungary, located in the middle of Europe with an open economy, has a history of losing out in conflicts between east and west.

Europe, he added, faces historic challenges, so it is natural that there are debates about its future and on how to secure a strong Europe.

Whenever “someone strays from the mainstream” in the debate on the European Union’s future, it is wrong that they immediately get labelled “un-European”, he said.

China and the United States took a big step forward in relations to reach a trade war truce, US President Donald Trump said on Monday, as China prepared to send a big delegation to the US for further talks.

In a series of tweets, Trump said his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Buenos Aires on the weekend was “an extraordinary one”.

“Relations with China have taken a BIG leap forward! Very good things will happen. We are dealing from great strength, but China likewise has much to gain if and when a deal is completed. Level the field!” Trump said in the tweet, adding that he and Xi had “a very strong and personal relationship”.

“He and I are the only two people that can bring about massive and very positive change, on trade and far beyond, between our two great Nations. A solution for North Korea is a great thing for China and ALL!”

Qatar to quit Opec amid tensions with Saudi Arabi

Qatar will leave OPEC next month to focus on gas production, the Gulf state’s new Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi announced in a surprise move on Monday.

Qatar has been a member of OPEC since 1961 and the decision to pull out came at a turbulent time in Gulf politics, with Doha under a boycott by former neighbouring allies including Saudi Arabia for 18 months.

‘Precision strikes’ in Syria kill IS leader linked to beheading of American aid worker Peter Kassig

An Islamic State group leader involved in the execution of American aid worker Peter Kassig and other Western prisoners was targeted in a strike by the US-led anti-jihadist coalition in Syria.

Kassig, aged 26 at the time of his death, was among a group of prisoners decapitated by jihadists in November 2014.

Kassig, who changed his name to Abdul-Rahman Kassig after he converted to Islam while in Islamic State captivity, was executed the year after he was taken hostage in Syria.
