Think classified tech, think internet service providers - providing ip addresses to the agencies, and most of all (for vpn users) think metadata collection. Metadata is what profiles you as a human (the content you click on, the browser data, even the typing patterns).
So even if you use a vpn, it is possible to createa profile based in your behavior, and once you log to google or enter somepersonal details, your profile can be connected to an actual person.
To add even further, while metadata collection and profiling is probably the work horse of the surveilance, when the agencies or the government eeally want to look you up, they probably have internal weaknesses and backdoors in comercial browsers, operating systems and probably even hardware (like the big security breach that was discovered in intel processors a year ago). They even duscovered an inherent weakness in the wpn2 wifi protocol. Who knows how long it was exploited before found and published.
Given that your vpn is legit and not a honeypit that passes the ip translation tables to the agencies, its probably metadata.
When you log to google account, facebook/twitter, you are being identified via metadata. All it takes is for large network sniffers to collect the data, merge it all under one profile, and connect the profile to a real person via sime login info or other activity that might identify the virtual profile as a real person. After your vortual profile is identified, all it takes is to cross check with US addresses data base and boom, they have it all.
