For Marines this is an interesting issue. A few years back General Amos, Commandant of the Marine Corps, passed a new policy. Officially all marines who have ever served honorably are still marines.

There are no more "ex-marines" any longer, by order of the Commandant.

That means they are subject to the orders of the CinC because the Marines are, by law, the "President's Own". Someone might come up with a lawyerfag argument about "he can't do that" but as a Marine I'd tell you to go fuck yourself with a Jim Comey sized dildo and then leave to die. Alone. In the rain.

That's an extremely contentious issue around here and people get banned just for airing an opinion. Many here don't get the idea of double meanings.

I'll tell you a story.

Once upon a time, there was a HUGE interservice brawl that put a really large and popular E-club (San Diego area) out of business for over 6 months because of the damage caused. It was three-way between Army/Navy/Marine until the shore patrol turned up, then everyone changed sides and it was Army/Navy/Marine against the shore patrol.

Shore patrol was getting its ass kicked as the senior men were getting their people out of their and the MP's showed up and threw tear gas. A platoon of Marines went to their barracks (very close), got their gas masks and went back to get the rest of their people out. As I recall, very few people got arrested that night.
