IG: Fed Employee Downloaded 9,000 Pages of Pornography, Infecting Network with Russian Malware

A U.S. Interior Department network was infected with Russian malware because an employee downloaded 9,000 pages of pornography on his laptop, an Inspector General (IG) report reveals.

The IG investigation was launched when a routine internet security audit discovered “suspicious internet traffic” on a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center network – from a Soviet Union IP address:

“The Office of Inspector General investigated suspicious internet traffic discovered during an IT security audit of the computer network at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center satellite imaging facility in Sioux Falls, SD.

“The audit discovered a U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) Domain Name Server (DNS) requesting a .SU (Soviet Union) IP address. Our initial log reviews indicated that an EROS employee’s laptop contained malware, some of which automatically connected to multiple servers for approximately 11 months, including sites hosting pornography and sites in the .RU (Russia) domain. Though the EROS Center houses classified information, we found no indication that classified material was released.”

The employee had downloaded more than 9,000 pages of pornography over a six-month period – which infected the network with the Russian malware - the IG probe discovered:

“Our investigation substantiated that the employee’s unauthorized activity introduced malware onto the network. The employee confessed to routinely visiting adult pornography websites for many years, using his USGS-issued laptop. The employee admitted that he knew it was wrong to view pornography on his Government computer.

“Our digital forensic examination revealed the employee’s extensive history of adult pornography surfing. We confirmed that between September 26, 2016 and March 13, 2017, the employee’s user profile accessed more than 9,000 web pages containing adult pornography. Most of those web pages contained multiple pornographic images per page.

“Many of those web pages routed through websites that originated in Russia and contain malware. Our analysis confirmed that many of the pornographic images were subsequently saved to an unauthorized USB device and personal Android cell phone connected to the employee’s Government-issued computer.

“The digital forensic examination results also confirmed the presence of malware, which was introduced to the USGS network via the employee’s internet activity.”

Downloading 9,000 pages of pornography over a six-month period is equivalent to about 1,500 pages a month, or nearly 50 pages per day.

The day before he was to be fired, the GS-12 employee retired, the IG report states:

“The employee retired from USGS on November 25, 2017, the day before his employment was to be terminated. We are providing this report to the Director of the USGS for any action deemed appropriate.”

GS-12 level federal workers earn between $73,375 and $95,388 a year, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) pay scale for 2018.

STONE UPDATE

Roger Stone denies Trump committed witness tampering by praising his 'guts'

President Trump’s former campaign adviser Roger Stone on Tuesday denied that Mr. Trump committed witness tampering a day before by publicly praising his unwillingness to testify against him.

Mr. Stone pushed back on social media after several lawyers suggested that the president may have obstructed justice by applauding his former adviser’s “guts” on Twitter.

“No ‘Legal Scholar’ who isn’t a drooling [Trump-hating] libtard thinks the President’s tweet constitutes ‘witness tampering,’ ” Mr. Stone wrote in an Instagram post.

“I’m proud to have the praise of my friend of 40 years,” Mr. Stone said in another. “Witness tampering my ass.”

Mr. Trump faced fresh scrutiny after mentioning Mr. Stone on Twitter early Monday, moments after ripping Michael Cohen, the president’s former personal attorney, for cooperating with federal investigators.

“You mean he can do all of the TERRIBLE, unrelated to Trump, things having to do with fraud, big loans, Taxis, etc., and not serve a long prison term?” Mr. Trump tweeted about Mr. Cohen. “He lied for this outcome and should, in my opinion, serve a full and complete sentence.”

” ‘I will never testify against Trump,’ ” Mr. Trump several tweeted minutes later. “This statement was recently made by Roger Stone, essentially stating that he will not be forced by a rogue and out of control prosecutor to make up lies and stories about ‘President Trump.’ Nice to know that some people still have ‘guts!’ “

Legal experts subsequently claimed that Mr. Trump may have obstructed justice in the form of witness tampering — a crime that outlaws attempts to “influence, intimidate or impede” grand jury proceedings.

“Federal law makes it a crime to do anything to dissuade, try to postpone or delay someone’s testimony,” said Elie Honig, a former assistant U.S. attorney with the Southern District of New York. “When you look at the president’s tweets from this morning, if I was a prosecutor and we had a wiretap up on someone’s phone and they said those exact things that the president tweeted, I would say, ‘Wow, we just got him on obstruction,’ ” he told CNN.

“This is genuinely looking like witness tampering,” echoed Neal Katyal, a former U.S. acting solicitor general. “The fact it’s done out in the open is no defense. Trump is genuinely melting down, and no good lawyer can represent him under these [circumstances].”

Mr. Stone, 66, served as an adviser to Mr. Trump’s presidential election campaign through 2015. He later made repeated statements during the race about the WikiLeaks website and its publication in 2016 of material damaging to Mr. Trump’s opponent, former Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton.

Special counsel Robert Mueller’s office is investigating the circumstances surrounding those disclosures as part of the Justice Department probe into alleged Russian election interference and related matters.

Russian hackers sourced the Democratic material published by WikiLeaks, according to U.S. officials. Mr. Mueller’s office is investigating matters including whether anyone involved in Mr. Trump’s campaign coordinated in their release.

Mr. Stone has repeatedly denied involvement.

CIA Director Gina Haspel briefed a select group of senators this morning on Jamal Khashoggi's murder at the insistence of lawmakers demanding an assessment on the Saudi crown prince's knowledge of the death.

Sen. Lindsey Graham had threatened to withhold his vote on any legislation that comes to the upper chamber until Haspel, who was missing from a briefing for senators last week, came to Capitol Hill.

Haspel is now briefing top Republican and Democratic senators on national security committees, including Graham, in addition to party leadership.

The rank and file are being excluded though and Sen. Rand Paul is up in arms.

He accused bad actors in the Trump administration, 'the deep state,' of withholding information that could implicate Mohammed bin Salman in Khashoggi's murder.

Paul suggested the White House was hand-picking which lawmakers would hear from Haspel in an effort to change their minds about rolling back U.S. support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen.

'My theory is, they have selected people who wanted to hear from her, but also people who they think they may be able to get to change their vote if they have heard from the CIA on this,' Paul told CNN on Monday evening. 'I think we all should hear from her.'

He reiterated his frustrations on Tuesday of Fox News in a clip that Graham endorsed on Twitter. The senator said, 'On this, I stand with Rand!'

Paul told reporters that if he had been in the briefing, he would be asking about media reports that there is communication between the killers and the crown prince.

'I think the time has come for the Senate to grab back foreign policy and say that you know what, the president, no president, this president or the previous president, has the power to take our country to war with Saudi Arabia and Yemen without the permission of the president.'

Asked directly if he is accusing the White House of blocking him from attending the briefing, Paul said that it has 'nothing to do with Trump' as he accused the deep state of selectively disseminating intelligence to congressional leaders.

Graham charged in a Monday night op-ed that Trump was engaging in 'willful blindness' when it comes to the Saudi crown prince and that he and 62 other senators were right to vote they way they did last week on Yemen.

'Given the evidence U.S. intelligence has gathered on Khashoggi’s killing, denying the crown prince’s involvement amounts to willful blindness. Failing to censure him would give authoritarians a green light to murder their critics,' he said. 'To borrow a Churchill phrase, inaction wouldn’t only give the disturbing impression the U.S. has a price, but also that its price is quite low.'….
