The day Brennan says she was sexually assaulted by Alvarez, who at the time was director of Muslim and Latino outreach for Murphy’s gubernatorial campaign.
According to an account Brennan, 31, provided to the Wall Street Journal, Alvarez attacked her inside her apartment in Jersey City after he gave her a ride home from a bar outing attended by campaign staff. She said Alvarez, who has denied the allegation through an attorney, asked to use her bathroom and have a drink of water, but instead forced himself on top of her and sexually assaulted her.
“I say, ‘Stop, why are you doing this?’” Brennan told the newspaper. “And then I straight up said: ‘This is not consensual.’”
He continued to attack her, she said, pulling off her pants and underwear, taking off some of his own clothes and then thrust on top of her. She said she was able to get away, kicking him off of her and locking herself in a bathroom until he left.
Brennan immediately contacted her husband, who was in Sweden at the time, and her best friend, who came to the apartment to stay with her for several days. Both confirmed the account to the newspaper.
