SYRIA UPDATE

PM Khamis to Slovak delegation: Terrorist war against Syria failed

During the meeting, Khamis stressed the importance of revealing the truth about the terrorist war against the Syrian people to the European public opinion which has been flooded with Western media fabrications, underlining the necessity of cooperation between progressive parties and exchanging expertise in all fields in a way that reflects positively on the interests of their peoples. Khamis indicated that Syria is on road to sealing a victory over terrorism and restoring safety to all areas, affirming that the terrorist war has failed to undermine Syria’s sovereignty and independent national decision thanks to the Syrian people’s support for their army and leadership.

Zakharova: Washington’s suspicious behavior in Syria worries Moscow

The suspicious behaviors of the US-led international coalition in Syria is becoming increasingly worrying to Moscow, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday. Regarding the US statements on the necessity of forming a committee for discussing the Constitution within the current month, Zakharova said that these statements do not serve the interest of the political process in Syria, adding that the US tries to derail all the political initiatives, thus, Moscow considers such statements as non-constructive.

Syrian Army Eliminates Group Of Radical Militants In Northern Lattakia

“A unit of the SAA, based in the northern Lattakia countryside, clashed with a terrorist group, which attempted to infiltrate and attack a military position located in [the village of] Ayn al-Hur, 5km north of the town of Kinsabba on the Lattakia-Jisr al-Shughur highway,” a military source told SANA.

This new violation of the Russian-Turkish demilitarized zone agreement was likely carried out by the al-Qaeda-affiliated Horas al-Din or Ajnad al-Kavkaz or the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP) or Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The four radical groups control almost all the opposition-held area in the northern Lattakia countryside.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham Boosts Its Presence In Idlib Demilitarized Zone Retaking Positions From Turkish-backed Militants

As it has been noted by multiple experts, the Idlib demilitarized zone agreement itself is not enough to put an end to violence in the northwestern part of Syria. The Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) and Turkish-backed militant groups have done nothing to eliminate Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda) in Idlib. So, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham is now working to boost its presence in the “demilitarized zone”.

Recently, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham captured the village of Zayzun and several nearby points in western Hama from the Turkish-backed National Front for Liberation (NLF). Zayzun is located in the demilitarized zone and is supposed to be free of radicals and heavy weapons. However, this appears to be far from the reaility.

According to local sources, the NFL, without a direct TAF assistance, is not capable of preventing the further expansion of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which had exploited the ceasefire [started in September] to regroup and resupply own forces.

SDF Claims 200 More ISIS Members Were Killed In Euphrates Valley

On December 5, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced that it killed 228 fighters of ISIS while repelling several attacks by the terrorist group in the middle Euphrates River Valley over the last three days.

“All the axes are still witnessing intermittent clashes until the time of writing this report,” the SDF media center said.

During the clashes, US-led coalition warplanes supported SDF fighters on the ground by conducting more than 115 airstrikes on positions, gatherings and vehicles of ISIS in the Euphrates Valley.

Syrian Army Eliminate ISIS Terrorists in Al-Suwayda Province. US-controlled Zone of Al-Tanf Used by ISIS Terrorists as a Safe Haven

“The terrorists had been there for a long time, flocking to the area for several months. Among them were militants who were able to leave Yarmouk and Damascus in advance and also arrived from al-Tanf. Another difficulty was that tanks and heavy artillery have very limited maneuverability there, while the militants had many grenade launchers, anti-tank missiles and 82mm mortars,” the spokesman stated. The US-controlled zone of al-Tanf is being actively used by ISIS terrorists as a safe haven to hide from Syrian Army attacks and to re-locate its forces in eastern Syria. While it exists, it’s not likely that ISIS cells could be fully wiped out in this part of the country.

From its side, the US-led coalition is contributing every possible effort to prevent any security operations of the Syrian Army near the al-Tanf zone. On December 2, the coalition shelled Syrian Army positions near the al-Ghurab mount at the border with Iraq. The US-led force reportedly employed M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) deployed at the al-Tanaf base. The formal reason of the attack is unknown but US forces had repeatedly attacked Syrian Army units pursuing terrorists in the area on the edge of the so-called security zone near al-Tanf.

Activation of Russian S-400s in Syria Increases Threat to US Troops - General

The possible activation of Russian S-400 missile defenсe systems in Syria would pose an increased threat to American troops and US-led coalition forces, Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, nominee to head US Central Command (CENTCOM), said during his confirmation hearing in the US Senate on Tuesday.

"The S-400, once activated, will increase the threat to our forces and our coalition partners flying over Syria," he said. "We are still working out on how it is going to be executed."

Russia has deployed S-400 mobile missile batteries at the Khmeimim Airbase in Syria but has not yet activated the defence systems.

The S-400 is the next-generation mobile defence system which can carry three different types of missiles capable of destroying a variety of aerial targets at short and extremely long ranges, from reconnaissance aircraft to ballistic missiles.

Balance in Syria

McKenzie also stressed that Washington would not seek to affect the Russian forces in the region while conducting operations against terrorists.

"It is clearly not an objective of our presence in Syria," McKenzie said during Senate testimony when asked whether the goal of the US military presence in Syria was to serve as a check against Russia's influence there.

The US-led coalition of more than 70 countries is conducting military operations against the Daesh* terror group in Syria and Iraq. The coalition's operations in Iraq are conducted in cooperation with the Iraqi government, but those in Syria are not authorized by the government of President Bashar Assad or the United Nations Security Council. Moreover, according to Damascus, the coalition killed a vast number of civilians during the campaign and used white phosphorus munitions, which are banned by the UN.

Leaked report: Israel acknowledges Jews in fact Khazars; Secret plan for reverse migration to Ukraine

Fast-breaking Developments

Followers of Middle Eastern affairs know two things: always expect the unexpected, and never write off Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who has more political lives than the proverbial cat.

Only yesterday came news that Syrian rebels plan to give Israel the Golan Heights in exchange for creation of a no-fly zone against the Assad regime. In an even bolder move, it is now revealed, Israel will withdraw its settlers from communities beyond the settlement blocs—and relocate them at least temporarily to Ukraine. Ukraine made this arrangement on the basis of historic ties and in exchange for desperately needed military assistance against Russia. This surprising turn of events had an even more surprising origin: genetics, a field in which Israeli scholars have long excelled.

A Warlike Turkic People—and a Mystery

It is well known that, sometime in the eighth to ninth centuries, the Khazars, a warlike Turkic people, converted to Judaism and ruled over a vast domain in what became southern Russia and Ukraine. What happened to them after the Russians destroyed that empire around the eleventh century has been a mystery. Many have speculated that the Khazars became the ancestors of Ashkenazi Jews.

Senators Working to Slip Israel Anti-Boycott Law Through in Lame Duck

Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin is making a behind-the-scenes push to slip an anti-boycott law into a last-minute spending bill being finalized during the lame-duck session, according to four sources familiar with the negotiations.

The measure, known as the Israel Anti-Boycott Act, was shelved earlier amid concerns about the infringement of free speech, after civil liberties groups argued that the original version would have allowed criminal penalties for Americans who participate in a political boycott of Israel. Some of the more aggressive elements of the provision have been removed under pressure, but the American Civil Liberties Union, which spearheaded the initial opposition to the bill, is still strongly opposed.

In a letter to Congress, the ACLU warned that the amended version still creates unconstitutional restrictions on free speech. “We understand the Senate is considering attaching a revised version of S. 720 to the end-of-the-year omnibus spending bill, and we urge you to oppose its inclusion,” reads a letter dated December 3.

On Monday, incoming Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., became the second member of Congress to publicly endorse the Boycott, Sanctions, and Divestment movement, or BDS, which Cardin’s measure is meant to combat. She joined incoming Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., who had become the first to publicly endorse it. Neither would be able to vote on the measure, as they won’t be sworn in until January.

The Senate measure, which has a House companion, is part of a broad push to undermine support of BDS in both the U.S. and Europe, often conflating the boycott with anti-Semitism. According to the activist group Palestine Legal, which monitors anti-BDS legislation across the country, as of June 2018, 25 states had enacted laws punishing businesses that choose to boycott Israel. In 2017, one city in Texas even required businesses to certify that they would not boycott Israel before receiving hurricane aid.

The Israel Anti-Boycott Act, which was introduced last year by Cardin and Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, would amend the 1979 Export Administration Act to allow penalties for companies who join boycotts of Israel called for by international institutions — like the United Nations or the European Union. The new version clarifies that people cannot face jail time for participating in a boycott, but the ACLU has argued that it still leaves the door open for criminal financial penalties. Defenders of the bill say that it is strictly aimed at preventing companies from facing pressure to boycott Israel and that it is not meant to restrict an individual’s free speech.

Trump, Pentagon Official at Odds Over Spending Levels

Trump says level of spending is 'crazy'

President Trump was very comfortable championing massive military spending increases after taking office, declaring himself the most pro-military person ever. He jumped ahead of Pentagon requests, and Congress jumped ahead of him, leading to record military spending.

On Monday, Trump showed signs of buyer’s remorse, saying he believes the current levels of spending are “crazy” and that there needs to be a meaningful halt to global arms races. He called for talks with Russia and China on slowing down this runaway spending growth.

No one seems to have prepared other officials to echo this narrative, however, so on Tuesday, Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie told the Senate Armed Services Committee that anything short of the requested $733 billion budget would “increase risk” to the US.

This is a big distinction, as Trump has said he expects “probably $700 billion” in spending for the military in that next budget, while trying to rein in the soaring deficit. That was less cuts than other departments are facing, but it’s also still a cut, which has the military panicking.

This largely mirrors what was seen during the “sequestration” years, where even though the Pentagon never met mandated sequestration cuts, they still spend every year prophisizing doom to Congress for purely hypothetical cuts.

The big change this time around is Trump, as during sequestration, virtually everyone was on board with just pretending it was a thing. Trump seems uncomfortable with what his soaring Pentagon budget is doing to his overall budget, and that could put him in the rare position of actually wanting cuts.

As far as courting support from Russia and China for cuts, however, Trump may struggle. Russia is already cutting its military spending substantially, and both of those nations’ spending are dwarfed by America’s own enormous military. This is clearly a much bigger problem for the US than for anyone else.

And while Trump is in a position to push such cuts as necessary, it still remains to be seen if he can cut through the inevitable objections from both the Pentagon and Congressional hawks, for whom anything short of a major increase is unacceptable, and an actual, real cut would be unthinkable.

"Your Bishops, Kill Them": Duterte Says Most Catholic Priests Gay, Useless; Warns Against Moralizing

Catholic clergy in the Philippines may want to stay away from helicopters after President Duterte lashed out at the Church.

"Itong mga obispo ninyo, patayin ninyo. Walang silbi yang mga gagong yan," [Translation: Your bishops, kill them. They are stupid and useless," said Rodrigo Duterte in a Wednesday speech at an event in Malacañang, adding "All they do is criticize."

Speaking later at an awards ceremony for the country's top overseas Filipino workers (OFW), Duterte slammed the Catholic Church for hypocritical moralizing and claimed that most priests are gay.

"Most of the priests there are homosexuals. Almost 90 percent of you. So, do not postulate on me morality," he said - adding that the Catholic God was "stupid," and far different from his God who has a "lot of common sense."

"I never said I do not believe in God. What I said is your God is stupid, mine has a lot of common sense. That's what I told the bishops," Duterte clarified.

He then slammed Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David who has been a key critic of the Duterte administration's war on drugs - claiming on November 22 that David had stolen Church donations. Days later, Duterte suggested that the Bishop could be involved in trafficking of illegal drugs.
