I posted this right before I had to leave. This prayer is what I was referring to. I remember it triggered the poem as a response in my mind but thought Q had said more about it.

If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

The bells rang 44 times. The priest began speaking at the 33rd ring ( 33rd degree Mason?) but the bell continued to ring.
