Fiat Chrysler announces plans to open new factory in Detroit

The factory will reportedly focus on producing trucks and SUVs

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Fiat Chrysler is planning to open a manufacturing plant in Detroit. This comes on the heels of General Motors announcing that it will be closing a plant in the same city.

Here's what we know

According to the Wall Street Journal, this is the first assembly plant to be opened by any major domestic car company in the United States in a decade. For a struggling Detroit, this will be the first new auto assembly line in 27 years, according to the Detroit News.

The new plant will focus on producing trucks and SUVs. Fiat told the WSJ that this focus was due to consumer interest, which has shifted away from smaller passenger cars. CNBC reports that Fiat Chrysler's existing truck and SUV manufacturing plants in the United States are running near capacity.

The plant will be housed at a Mack II Engine Plant that closed in 2012. The Detroit News estimated that the new plant could create up to 400 jobs.

Italian automaker Fiat had started buying up shares in Chrysler in 2009, when the American car company filed for bankruptcy. By 2014, the American car company was a subsidiary of Fiat. Fiat Chrysler's sales in the U.S. were up 8 percent in 2018.

What else?

This announcement comes less than a month after General Motors announced that it would be laying off 14,700 workers in the United States and Canada, and shutting down assembly facilities in Detroit; Warren, Ohio; and Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, as well as propulsion plants in White Marsh, Maryland; and Warren, Michigan.

President Donald Trump slammed GM for the decision to close those facilities, and threatened to end government subsidies for its electric cars in retaliation.

The Ford Motor Company also said in late November that it would be cutting a shift at two separate plants, in an effort to prevent layoffs.

Former Baywatch actress Pamela Anderson has attacked Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Salvini and warned that the country is ‘sliding towards fascism.

On Twitter the actress warned that Italy’s ‘anti-migration sentiment’ and France’s yellow vest protests are European problems.

“Italy is a beautiful country and I love it so much, from its food to its fashion, from its history to its arts, but I am very worried about the current trends which are reminding me of the 1930s,” Anderson said.

“The fear and insecurity in all segments of society, the daily attacks on refugees and migrants, the deepening economic crisis…

“Mr. Salvini recently said that “Macron is a problem for the French”, meaning what is happening currently in France with the Gilets Jaunes protests is something that concerns only the French. This is wrong.

“What is happening in France these days is a European problem, in the same way that the anti-immigrant measures and slide towards a new form of fascism in Italy is a European problem.

“The solution is not more Macron or more Salvini, the actually need each other and reinforce each other, the solution can only be a Pan-European awakening across borders and nationalities, which would be able to tackle the deep economic, social and ecological crisis of Europe today”.

US demands Russia ‘end or modify’ missile it doesn’t like to save INF treaty

Washington is demanding that Moscow scrap or modify a missile dubbed “non-compliant” with the landmark INF nuclear arms treaty by US intelligence. Russia has repeatedly said the missile falls well within the range allowed.

Russia would need to either “end” the 9M729 missile program, or modify it to be in compliance with the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty, Andrea Thompson, Undersecretary for Arms Control at the State Department, told reporters at a telephone briefing on Thursday.

“Either you [get rid of] the system, [get rid of] the launcher or change the system where it doesn't exceed the range" in a verifiable manner, Thompson said.

The 9M729, referred to by NATO as SSC-8, is believed to be a cruise missile variant launched from the Iskander-M ballistic missile platform. Russia has repeatedly said its range is no longer than the 500 km banned by the INF treaty.

While no report from the missile tests has contradicted this, the US intelligence community nonetheless believes its range could be greater. The assumption is based on the performance of different air- and sea-launched Russian cruise missiles, Kh-101 and Kalibr, neither of which is banned by the treaty.

On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo gave Russia 60 days to “fix compliance” with the INF or the US will withdraw from it unilaterally. Moscow responded by inviting Pompeo to personally visit a test of the ‘problematic’ missile

Cuomo Condemns Lemon For What He Said He’d Do To Trump At HW’s Funeral If He Were Obama

CNN’s Don Lemon said Wednesday night that he would have snubbed President Donald Trump at former President George H.W. Bush’s funeral if he was former President Barack Obama. Chris Cuomo, whose show airs immediately before Lemon’s, condemned those remarks.

“They showed the ultimate respect for the office. They do not have to show respect for someone who does not respect them, someone who tweets out pictures of them behind bars. You don’t have to show respect for that kind of person. Let me show you what I would have done,” Lemon continued.

Lemon then called over someone who works on the show, and the camera panned out to show a man approaching Lemon. The man reached his hand out for a handshake, and Lemon promptly turned his back to him.

“You’re petty and small,” Cuomo interjected.
