An investigation of internet child porn ended today with the arrest of a Belle Isle contractor after thousands of illegal images of children as young as 6 were seized from his Hoffner Avenue home, according to a statewide cyber crime unit.

Frederick James Ward was picked up at the Hilton Hotel Bonnet Creek near Walt Disney World, arrest records show.

Ward, 54, became a suspect in July when the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's Cyber/High-Tech Crime unit noticed internet files depicting the sexual exploitation were being shared by a computer later tracked to his internet address, records show.

“Websites such as Backpage are certainly not our allies in our efforts to prevent child sexual exploitation,” said Arlington police Chief Frederick Ryan, who has an officer assigned to the FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force. “The very nature of what they’re doing is perpetuating child exploitation. These are heart-wrenching cases.”

Last month, three young girls filed a federal lawsuit in Boston accusing Backpage of protecting its lucrative business model by aiding child traffickers — allegations a lawyer for the company denies.

“Backpage allows pimps and buyers — who are often very violent — easy accessibility and anonymity to buy these girls,” said Boston police Sgt.
