Question for the lawfags:

 

Assume the house were to impeach Trump. Further assume the Senate takes it up. As I understand it there would be essentially a trial just as if it were in court with all the rules of evidence, witnesses, and cross examination applied. Best I can find the Senate basically can set any rules it wants but precedent is the existing trial rules.

 

So would Trump be able to introduce evidence re: the misdoings of the DS? We are talking a public forum here, no hiding behind secrecy etc? Certainly everyone would be watching. Basically zero chance of the Senate convicting, Roberts would preside so at least neutral there. Other than the historical asterisk there is limited downside.
