I'd like to read holy texts but I'm skeptical (since most versions were altered)

I also plan on reading the holy texts unapproved by vatican / NIV.

Is it a good idea? or not really

Will it influence my personality and actions (I don't want to be pre-programmed, pawned, or similar).
