Paris riot police fired tear gas and rubber bullets near the famous Champs-Elysees boulevard against "yellow vest" protesters who are staging another weekend of demonstrations against French President Emmanuel Macron.
The French government said 31,000 people were protesting across France, including 8,000 in Paris. Around 700 people have been arrested so far today.
Police tried push back hundreds of protesters gathered around the shopping boulevard and the Arc de Triomphe monument. The gendarmerie, France's paramilitary police, deployed armoured vehicles onto the streets of Paris.
Police stopped some protesters boarding trains for Paris and confiscated equipment they feared would be used for criminal damage. They found weapons such as hammers, baseball bats and metal petanque balls on them.
Donald Trump, the US president, tweeted "the Paris Agreement isnโt working out so well for Paris", in an apparent attempt to link the protests to the climate change deal he pulled the US out of.
