Hungary rejects ‘UN Refugee Pact’ pact as well: “It creates a security risk we cannot tolerate”

As it has done with the United Nations’ migration pact, Hungary rejects the organisation’s global refugee pact as well, the foreign minister said on Friday, arguing that the document was dangerous and could encourage more migration.

Simultaneously with its Global Compact for Migration, the UN has drafted a “sister document”, the Global Compact on Refugees, Peter Szijjarto told a press conference. This pact, he said, was about “bringing in through a back door whoever they can’t bring in through the main gate with the migration pact”. Though this package is about refugees, there have been a number of debates recently about “how they can try to classify as refugees those who arrive as illegal migrants”, Szijjarto said.

Szijjarto said there are serious international endeavours for bringing illegal migrants into Europe and North America. It is not by chance that the United States has rejected both compacts, he said. As refugee issues have been regulated by plenty of international conventions, there is no need for “bypassing the UN member states” with another pact and forcing them to accept illegal migrants re-classified as refugees.

The “buzzword” of the document is sharing burdens, as it was when the European Union tried to impose migrant quotas on its member states, the minister said. For this reason, Hungary insisted on inserting the “voluntary principle” into the text but its proposal was rejected. “This was a telltale sign”, Szijjarto said.

High ranking colonel arrested in child sex sting

Earlier this week, the FBI Metro Atlanta Child Exploitation Task Force held a sting to catch alleged sex traffickers and made multiple arrests in the process. During the sting, a high-ranking Air Force Colonel was ensnared by federal agents.

The undercover sex bust unfolded Tuesday night at a Cobb County hotel at which Lt. Col. Willie Newson, 47, was arrested. According to authorities, Newson thought he was meeting a 14-year-old girl at the hotel. He was actually meeting undercover agents pretending to be a child.

Georgia Department of Defense spokeswoman Desiree Bamba told AJC.com that Newson is on the command staff of Maj. Gen. Jesse T. Simmons Jr., who is the commander of the Georgia Air National Guard. Newson also was formerly the commander of the 165th Communication Flight of the 165th Airlift Wing, according to the official.

"Lt. Col. Newson's alleged actions do not reflect the values we uphold in the Georgia National Guard," she said.

As WSB-TV reports, the "undercover officer that Newson spoke with gave him the opportunity to stop communicating several times." However, Newson continued to pursue who he thought was a 14-year-old girl.

The Air Force Colonel was using a popular dating app to pursue the child.

On Tuesday, Newson was arrested on multiple charges stemming from the child exploitation charges. After he was taken into custody, he immediately bailed himself out for $20,000.

He is currently on leave pending the outcome of the case.

Wall Street's corruption runs deeper than you can fathom

Of the myriad policy decisions that have brought us to our current precipice, from the signing of the North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to the invasion of Iraq and the gerrymandering of House districts across the country, few have proven as consequential as the demise of Glass-Steagall. Signed into law as the U.S.A. Banking Act of 1933, the legislation had been crucial to safeguarding the financial industry in the wake of the Great Depression. But with its repeal in 1999, the barriers separating commercial and investment banking collapsed, creating the preconditions for an economic crisis from whose shadow we have yet to emerge.

Carmen Segarra might have predicted as much. As an employee at the Federal Reserve in 2011, three years after the dissolution of Lehman Brothers, she witnessed the results of this deregulation firsthand. In her new book, Noncompliant: A Lone Whistleblower Exposes the Giants of Wall Street, she chronicles the recklessness of institutions like Goldman Sachs and the stunning lengths the United States government went to to accommodate them, even as they authored one of the worst crashes in our nation's history.

"They didn't want to hear what I had to say," she tells Robert Scheer in the latest installment of "Scheer Intelligence." "And so I think what we have in terms of this story is really not just a failure of the banks and the regulators, but also a failure of our prosecutors. I mean, a lot of the statutes that could be used - criminal statutes, even, that could be used to hold these executives accountable are not being used, and they have not expired; we could have prosecutors holding these people accountable."

The dark side of paradise: how synthetic cannabis is turning Mauritius’ youths into zombies

It is better known for its white sand, crystal clear waters and burgeoning financial sector.

But the tiny Indian Ocean nation of Mauritius has a dark side. It is facing an epidemic of synthetic marijuana use among its youth – some as young as eight.

“It cuts across all social classes, various drug groups and all regions,” said Lindsay Thomas, rector of the College du Saint Esprit, a private Catholic school and one of the most prestigious secondary schools on the island. “We have pupils here from difficult financial backgrounds but it’s not those taking the drugs here. In a little country like ours a problem like this resonates across the island.”
