The SAFE Network is an autonomous peer-to-peer network developed by MaidSafe, a software development company based in Scotland. It was designed by David Irvine and is an open-source project. The SAFE in SAFE Network stands for Secure Access for Everyone and the software is in the alpha testing phase.[1]
Overview
The SAFE Network uses a consensus algorithm named PARSEC.[2] The software was first designed in 2006 as an encrypted overlay network that replaces the top four OSI layers of the current Internet: the application, presentation, session and transport layers. It is self-encrypted which describes the way that data stored on the network is broken into chunks with each chunk encrypted using a key derived from the other chunks; and a modified Kademlia distributed hash table which uses the logical operation XOR to ensure the randomized distribution and unique location of each data chunk on the network and which also incorporates a public key infrastructure for security.[3]
SAFE Network is currently in Alpha public testing phase[4]. Upon launch, it will have an internal currency called Safecoin.[5][6]. Safecoin will be exchangeable with other fiat currencies and cryptocurrencies.
The decentralized network is planned in such a way that the security is enhanced by splitting the data into encrypted chunks and spreading them at random over the network, with at least four copies of each chunk being maintained to ensure resilience.[7][8]
