(1) We know very precisely the dimensions of the earth. It's measured many different ways and agreement is found.
(2) We have quite good knowledge of electromagnetics ever since Maxwell. An electric or magnetic field will act differently in earth than in air, because the dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability are different in those two media.
