These are ethnic subgroups. Sepharadi are the jews of the east (historically - the descendants of those deported from catholic spain), while ashkenzim are western - northern europeans. The distinction is made cause they have some different traditions. But still It is too general, as the distinctions are superficial and apply to the orthodox subgroup.
