This story is similar in many ways to a scifi book from the q derived reading list. "Descent of Angels" by Michael Scanlon is one of a series pulpy sci fi about space empires called "the Horus Heresy".
Descent is an anomaly - a prequel about the formation of knightly order on a planet infested, as ours is by malignant ~n dimensional entities. The new order of knights founded by a great warrior is unusual in that it recruit new knights not from the nobility but from the common folk -a democratic innovation and serious break with tradition. Any body can be a patriot, or a knight, anyone who possesses the determination, capacity and honor.
Each candidate for knighthood must prove themselves worthy in combat and by their conduct - essentially service to others.
May be relevant, at least in part, to our situation.

It’s an interesting world in that it’s been cut off from the rest of humanity for thousands of years. So much so that the population starts to wonder if the tales they’ve heard about Terra, the ancient birth planet of humanity, are really ancient myths. The technology on the planet is very much a mix of science fiction and medieval; soldiers wear crude power armor and carry high tech pistols, but they also carry swords and ride horses.
