Misinterpretation. A Jewish state of Palestine was supposed to be created right then and there after WWI, but the British ran their old divide-and-conquer trick and did everything they could to keep the Jews out of power and cultivate a Muslim opposition. They created a generation of Arabs who would consider themselves "Palestinian" and empowered what would become the Muslim Brotherhood and later Al-Qaeda, spawning 100 years of worldwide Muslim jihad.
