Court ruling bars sales of Apple iPhones in China

Dec. 10 (UPI) – A Beijing court granted two preliminary injunctions Monday against Apple subsidiaries in China, forcing them to stop selling iPhones there because of patent infringement issues.

The San Diego-based chip maker said the injunctions placed by the Fuzhou Intermediate People's Court impact Chinese sales of the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X.

"We deeply value our relationships with customers, rarely resorting to the courts for assistance, but we also have an abiding belief in the need to protect intellectual property rights," Don Rosenberg, Qualcomm's general counsel, said in a statement.

Using Website Fingerprinting (WF) to deanonymize Tor users

The Tor network was established to provide anonymity to internet users who are concerned about preserving their anonymity when browsing specific online content. The Tor network is comprised of a set of router circuits that utilize cryptography to apply multiple layers of encryption to transmitted data packets, thus concealing the IP address of the user, the established connection between the user and the remote web server, and the online content they are accessing.

Even though Tor can offer high levels of anonymity, it can be vulnerable to a specific attack form known as Website Fingerprinting (WF). Via a WF attack, an adversary can guess the target web page accessed by a Tor user, under certain circumstances.

A recently published paper analyzed the robustness of the Tor network against WF attacks. For this purpose, an adversary who had the ability to eavesdrop the data packets sent and received by the target Tor user has been emulated. The attack was based on the postulation that the adversary knew in advance the group of possible remote web pages the Tor user would be browsing. In other words, the attack was performed under the assumption of the existence of a closed world.

India central bank chief Urjit Patel resigns amid government spat

India's central bank governor Urjit Patel resigned on Monday citing "personal reasons", a statement issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said.

"On account of personal reasons, I have decided to step down from my current position effective immediately," the statement read.

The government and the RBI have been fighting for weeks over how much autonomy the RBI should have as the administration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeks to reduce curbs on lending and to gain access to the RBI's surplus reserves.

Indian business dailies reported in the last two months that Modi's government had invoked never-before-used powers to send at least three letters to Patel seeking to affect the central bank's decision-making.

164 nations – not U.S. – sign global pact to safeguard migrants

Dec. 10 (UPI) – Leaders from 164 countries adopted a global pact Monday to improve the world's response to migration flows, but the United States walked away.

The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration gives migrants access to basic services and aims to prevent human smuggling through anti-trafficking efforts. It also seeks to eliminate discrimination and safeguard conditions that ensure decent work and facilitate safe and dignified returns.

"The compact only reaffirms that migrants should enjoy human rights and independently of their status," U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said at the start of a two-day conference in Marrakesh, Morocco, on Monday.

The United States did not support the non-binding pact, which has been in the works for two years. A year ago, the Trump administration said it was "inconsistent with U.S. immigration and refugee policies."

President Nicolas Maduro’s grip on Venezuela tightens, warns of Trump threat

Socialist President Nicolas Maduro further consolidated power in Venezuelan local elections Sunday, while accusing President Donald Trump of plotting to overthrow him

The majority of nearly 2,500 council seats spread across the crisis-stricken country went to members of Maduro’s United Socialist Party of Venezuela, election officials loyal to Maduro said.

After casting his ballot, Maduro spoke on state television scoffing at Trump and other foreign leaders who have labelled him a dictator.

“An attempt is under way today coming straight from the White House to destroy our way of life in Venezuela and to overthrow our constitutional democracy,” Maduro said.

The election came as an economic crisis rocks the once-wealthy oil country after two decades of socialist rule. Millions of Venezuelans have fled searching for a better life.

One trillion dollars are paid in bribes annually, while another 2.6 trillion are stolen; all due to corruption — UN

Secretary-General António Guterres deemed corruption “an assault on the values of the United Nations,” in a message on International Anti-Corruption Day, which is marked each 9 December.

He said that "it robs societies of schools, hospitals and other vital services, drives away foreign investment and strips nations of their natural resources,” he said.

One trillion dollars are paid in bribes annually, while another 2.6 trillion are stolen; all due to corruption.

The United Nations is fighting the global scourge, which affects both rich and poor countries, through initiatives like the global campaign launched jointly by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime(UNODC).

The campaign recognizes corruption as one of the biggest impediments to achieving the SDGs, or 2030 Sustainable Development Goals agreed by all nations of the world in 2015, to advance the whole of humankind. And to counter that pernicious reality, the campaign is asking communities to use the Anti-Corruption logo during related events, and highlight community actions related to the Day on social platforms by using the hashtag #UnitedAgainstCorruption and tagging @UNDP, @UNODC.

Who/What is behind the wizard behind the wall

Tim Ball: Is Robert Mueller A Technocrat Operative?

This is how America is perceived by one free-thinking Canadian. TN believes that the all-consuming controversies in Washington are nothing more that a smokescreen to hide massive Technocrat advances throughout America. ⁃ TN Editor

I don’t think I witnessed anything more anti-democratic, anti-freedom, and anti-everything I always thought America stood for than the actions of the MuelIer Special Counsel. I always thought entrapment was a crime. One definition says,

The Mueller Special Counsel could not fail. It set out to find fault, and if it didn’t, it was able, through deception, to trick people into incriminating themselves. Apparently, in some cases they even blackmailed people. Yes, blackmail! They indicated something the person or even their relatives did and told them it was a crime punishable by, in some cases life in prison. The person could not take the risk and so opted for a plea bargain. Even the threat of legal action and the cost of defense is beyond most people. That, by any definition, is blackmail.

Previously, the technocrats used lawyers and the law to protect themselves. They extended the reach of the law in the 1940s from Criminal and Civil law into Administrative Law. The latter, introduced by the lawyers on behalf of the technocrats, made it virtually impossible to fire a government bureaucrat. It was amazing and frightening to watch a person who works for the people, Lois Lerner, plead the fifth. Trump brags about finally, after 40 years, being able to dismiss an employee of the Department of Veterans Affairs. This is beyond belief and a measure of the extent to which the technocrats through their lackeys, the lawyers, have control. Who works for who?

As Trump and others began to fight back, the technocrats directed the lawyers to punish those who dared to step out of line. The Mueller Special Counsel was given an undefined and unlimited mandate by Rod Rosenstein, a technocrat/ bureaucrat/ and lawyer. Ordinary citizens are threatened with total economic and social destruction unless they agree to tell a lie. That is the fate that befell General Flynn. Mueller tells the media,
