I've often wondered if our "coveting" gold isn't from an ancestral memory not of what it was really useful for, but just the memory that it was important. Disease cures? Power generation? Interstellar transport? Time travel? Immortality?
Whatever it was it has kept the human race in thrall to it for thousands of years. Maybe the "Great Awakening" will reveal all. Hope so.
