250,000 Syrian refugees could return home next year: UNHCR

Up to 250,000 Syrian refugees could return to their devastated homeland in 2019, while many others face problems with documentation and property that the Damascus government must help resolve, the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR said Tuesday.

Some 5.6 million Syrian refugees remain in neighbouring countries – Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Iraq – Amin Awad, UNHCR director for the Middle East and North Africa, told a news briefing. Some 37,000 have returned this year, UNHCR figures show.

"We are forecasting in this phase up to 250,000 Syrians go back in 2019. That figure can go up and down according to the pace with which we are working and removing these obstacles to return," Awad said.

Washington - Trump Says Military To Build Border Wall If Democrats Refuse

Washington - President Donald Trump sought Tuesday to pressure Democratic congressional leaders into supporting his demand for billions of dollars to build his promised wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, threatening to have the military build it “if Democrats do not give us the votes to secure our Country.”

Trump tweeted the threat hours before Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi were to meet with Trump at the White House in an effort to avert a possible partial government shutdown on Dec. 21, when funding for some agencies is scheduled to expire.

In a series of tweets Tuesday, Trump said immigration and border patrol agents and thousands of active-duty service members he sent to the border have done a “FANTASTIC” job. But he said “A Great Wall would be, however, a far easier & less expensive solution.”

Trump said he looked forward to meeting with Schumer and Pelosi, but claimed they don’t want border security for “strictly political reasons.”

“If the Democrats do not give us the votes to secure our Country, the Military will build the remaining sections of the Wall. They know how important it is!” Trump said.

Shortly before the inauguration of President Donald Trump, stories appeared all across the mainstream media about a proposed presidential commission to study the possible links between vaccines and autism. What made the story all the more intriguing was that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told The Washington Post and other outlets that Trump had tapped him to chair the commission.

The article regarding this in the Jan. 10, 2017 issue of the Post epitomized the biased nature of the press. In the opening sentence, Kennedy was smeared for being “a proponent of a widely discredited theory that vaccines cause autism.”

Predictably, Trump appeared to immediately retreat in the midst of this media backlash, with a spokeswoman for the president-elect issuing a statement only hours later, which threw water on the idea. Trump, like Kennedy, has a history of being critical of vaccines, and had met with Kennedy at Trump Tower.

Trump Admin Refuses to Endorse Controversial United Nations Climate Report

On Sunday, United Nations diplomats and negotiators halted talks towards further climate change related studies, following efforts from the United States and other countries to refute new studies on the controversial “global warming” concept.

According to a statement from the US State Department, “The United States was willing to note the report and express appreciation to the scientists who developed it, but not to welcome it, as that would denote endorsement of the report.”

“As we have made clear in the IPCC and other bodies, the United States has not endorsed the findings of the report,” the State Department continued, echoing previous sentiments of the Trump administration, which has remained cold to the UN’s climate change agenda.

The United States joined Russia, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia in noting, rather than endorsing and accepting the studies, causing Alden Meyer of the Union of Concerned Scientists to lament the decision.

Study: Terrorism Deaths Declining Globally

Deaths caused by terrorism have fallen in the past three years worldwide, a new global study found.

The sixth annual Global Terrorism Index, published by the Sydney-based Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), said terrorism deaths decreased globally by 27 percent in 2017, which is the third consecutive year of declining death tolls.

Terrorism, however, remains a major threat to global peace, the report said.

The report also showed that most terrorist attacks affect countries where political violence is rampant.

The 10 nations most affected by terrorism were Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria, Pakistan, Egypt, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic and India.

New Brexit vote will be before Jan 21, says British PM May's spokesman

LONDON (REUTERS) - Britain's Parliament will vote on whether to approve Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit deal before Jan 21, her spokesman said on Tuesday (Dec 11).

May had been due to hold the vote later on Tuesday, but on Monday announced she would defer it and seek extra reassurances from the European Union to make sure it got through Parliament.

May is looking to resolve the impasse over her deal as quickly as possible, and intends to get the assurances she needs from European leaders before Jan 21, the spokesman told reporters.

The spokesman also said May had earlier held a productive meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, the first stop on a tour of European capitals. The two agreed to work to find a way through the current situation, he said.

May will hold a meeting of her Cabinet on Wednesday afternoon.
