UK PM May Says She Won't Seek Another Term As 'No Confidence' Vote Begins

With her Brexit deal facing almost certain defeat in the Commons, opposition parties threatening to bring down her government and European leaders refusing to reopen negotiations on the withdrawal treaty, Prime Minister Theresa May is heading into Wednesday's intraparty no confidence vote - which began only moments ago - in a tough position.

She has no obvious path forward that would stave off a 'no deal' Brexit (well, aside from hoping that an adverse market reaction and attendant political pressures inspire a change of heart in her MPs) and though she's expected to survive the vote, the tumultuous Brexit negotiations have hamstrung her government and deadened her political future.

Which is probably why May revealed during a speech at the 1922 Committee meeting held before voting begins at 1 pm that she will not seek another term as prime minister during the next general election in 2022. Her announcement, which confirmed hints from earlier out of No. 10, caused some ministers to weep.

However, analysts said the timing of May's announcement suggests she has made a back-door deal with Tory MPs to secure their votes in exchange for her stepping aside after the process of Brexit is complete (it's also an acknowledgement that she wouldn't be the best candidate to lead the Tories in the next vote after all the Brexit-related sniping has diminished her popularity.

Former Trump attorney Michael Cohen appeared in a Manhattan court Wednesday to face sentencing on nine charges.

Cohen was targeted by federal prosecutors because he worked for Republican Donald Trump.

They discovered crimes after he became a target.

Cohen wept as he begged the judge to give him no jail time. He threw Trump under the bus and said it was his ‘blind loyalty‘ that led him to cover up the President’s “dirty deeds,” CNBC reported.

“I take full responsibility for each act that I pled guilty to — the personal ones to me and those involving the president of the United States of America,” Cohen said in federal court in Manhattan before he was sentenced.

“Blind loyalty” to Trump “led me to take a path of darkness instead of light,” Cohen told the judge.

Before Judge William Pauley sentenced Cohen to 36 months in prison, he said, “Mr. Cohen pled guilt to a veritable smorgasbord of fraudulent conduct and each of these crimes standing alone warrant considerable punishment.”

The decision by Qatar to abandon OPEC threatens to redefine the global energy market, especially in light of Saudi Arabia’s growing difficulties and the growing influence of the Russian Federation in the OPEC+ mechanism.

In a surprising statement, Qatari energy minister Saad al-Kaabi warned OPEC on Monday December 3 that his country had sent all the necessary documentation to start the country’s withdrawal from the oil organization in January 2019. Al-Kaabi stressed that the decision had nothing to do with recent conflicts with Riyadh but was rather a strategic choice by Doha to focus on the production of LNG, which Qatar, together with the Russian Federation, is one of the largest global exporters of. Despite an annual oil extraction rate of only 1.8% of the total of OPEC countries (about 600,000 barrels a day), Qatar is one of the founding members of the organization and has always had a strong political influence on the governance of the organization. In a global context where international relations are entering a multipolar phase, things like cooperation and development become fundamental; so it should not surprise that Doha has decide to abandon OPEC. OPEC is one of the few unipolar organizations that no longer has a meaningful purpose in 2018, given the new realities governing international relations and the importance of the Russian Federation in the oil market.

Besides that, Saudi Arabia requires the organization to maintain a high level of oil production due to pressure coming from Washington to achieve a very low cost per barrel of oil. The US energy strategy targets Iranian and Russian revenue from oil exports, but it also aims to give the US a speedy economic boost. Trump often talks about the price of oil falling as his personal victory. The US imports about 10 million barrels of oil a day, which is why Trump wrongly believes that a decrease in the cost per barrel could favor a boost to the US economy. The economic reality shows a strong correlation between the price of oil and the financial growth of a country, with low prices of crude oil often synonymous of a slowing down in the economy.

It must be remembered that to keep oil prices high, OPEC countries are required to maintain a high rate of production, doubling the damage to themselves. Firstly, they take less income than expected and, secondly, they deplete their oil reserves to favor the strategy imposed by Saudi Arabia on OPEC to please the White House. It is clearly a strategy that for a country like Qatar (and perhaps Venezuela and Iran in the near future) makes little sense, given the diplomatic and commercial rupture with Riyadh stemming from tensions between the Gulf countries.

Pentagon Says DOD Could Fund Border Projects, After Trump Suggests Military Could Build the Wall

The Pentagon said Tuesday that there is no current plan for the military to build sections of the border wall, but suggested that the law would allow the Defense Department to fund doing so in some cases.

“To date, there is no plan to build sections of the wall. However, Congress has provided options under Title 10 U.S. Code that could permit the Department of Defense to fund border barrier projects, such as in support of counter drug operations or national emergencies,” Pentagon spokesman Army Lt. Col. Jamie Davis said.

The Pentagon statement came after President Trump on Tuesday morning said the military could build remaining sections of a border wall.

“People do not yet realize how much of the Wall, including really effective renovation, has already been built. If the Democrats do not give us the votes to secure our Country, the Military will build the remaining sections of the Wall. They know how important it is!” he tweeted Tuesday.

Trump later on Tuesday called the border crisis a “national emergency” during a meeting with incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (NY), and evoked drug control.

“We’re going to see. Look, we have to have the wall. This isn’t a question; this is a national emergency. Drugs are pouring into our country. People with tremendous medical difficulty and medical problems are pouring in, and in many — in many cases, it’s contagious. They’re pouring into our country. We have to have border security. We have to have a wall as part of border security,” he said.

Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA), the incoming chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, told reporters Tuesday that lawmakers on both sides of the aisle would try to stop Trump from using the military to build the wall, according to the Washington Examiner.

However, Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), chairman of the Armed Services Committee, left open the possibility of having the military build the wall, according to Bloomberg:

Inhofe, however, has been advocating for his own border funding bill.

In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News last week, Inhofe said his bill would fully fund the border wall by cutting off illegal aliens’ access to welfare benefits and tax credits.

The bill would stipulate that only Americans or legal immigrants with work-authorized Social Security numbers can claim child tax credits, earned income tax credits, and other tax credits.

Church of England Issues Guidance for Clergy on Sex Change ‘Celebration’ Ceremonies

New Church of England (CofE) guidance instructs parishes on how they should hold “celebratory” ceremonies to mark a person’s “transition” to the opposite sex.

Approved by the House of Bishops on Monday night, the pastoral guidance advises clergy to be “sensitive and creative” in incorporating the Affirmation of Baptismal Faith into church services which celebrate individuals embracing a new sexual identity.

“The Church of England welcomes and encourages the unconditional affirmation of trans people, equally with all people, within the body of Christ, and rejoices in the diversity of that body into which all Christians have been baptized by one Spirit,” asserts a statement published by the church Tuesday.

Transgender vicar Dr Rev Tina Beardsley hailed the move as a positive step, claiming that “many families are affected nowadays; a family member, a friend or a work colleague has undergone a transition.”

But the activist, whose social media activity revolves around the promotion of pro-LGBT causes, expressed disappointment over the church having stopped short of creating a whole new liturgy to mark transgender people’s decision to ‘change sex’.

The bishop of Blackburn and chair of the House of Bishops delegation committee, Julian Henderson, said: “We are absolutely clear that everyone is made in the image of God and that all should find a welcome in their parish Church.

“This new guidance provides an opportunity, rooted in scripture, to enable trans people who have ‘come to Christ as the way, the truth and the life’, to mark their transition in the presence of their Church family which is the body of Christ.”

However, Andrea Minichiello Williams, a lay member of the General Synod, blasted the new guidance for continuing the Church of England’s “devastating trajectory towards an outright denial of God and his word”.

The Christian Concern chief said in a statement: “The point of baptism is to identify a person with Jesus as they begin a life of following him. Using an affirmation of baptism to celebrate a gender transition turns this upside down by encouraging people to follow their own feelings and live in identities contrary to how God created them.

The Mongols defense attorney countered that the group is not criminal, and that any violence its members have been involved in was strictly in self defense.

Cohen at sentencing says Trump was right to call him weak: 'It was my duty to cover up his dirty deeds'

President Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen at his sentencing in federal court on Wednesday said the president was right to call him weak because it was his "duty" to cover up Trump's "dirty deeds."

"Recently the president tweeted a statement calling me weak, and it was correct but for a much different reason than he was implying," Cohen said, according to multiple reports. "It was because time and time again I felt it was my duty to cover up his dirty deeds."

Trump last month blasted Cohen as a "weak person" for pleading guilty to lying to Congress in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe.

Cohen was sentenced Wednesday to three years in federal prison for a series of crimes he committed while working for Trump, including campaign finance violations stemming from payments to two women alleging to have had affairs with Trump.

Trump's former longtime lawyer and fixer on Wednesday said he has been "leading a personal and mental incarceration" ever since he began working for Trump in the early 2000s.

"This may seem hard to believe but today is one of the most meaningful days of my life," Cohen said, Bloomberg reported. "The irony is today is the day I get my freedom back. I have been leading a personal and mental incarceration ever since the fateful day that I accepted the offer to work for a famous real estate mogul whose business acumen I greatly admired."

Cohen also lamented the impact his legal woes have had on his family.

"There is no sentence that can supersede the suffering I live with on a daily basis knowing that my actions have brought undeserved pain and shame upon my family," Cohen said. "I deserve that shame, they do not.”

Toward the end of his remarks, Cohen handed a tissue to his crying daughter, according to Bloomberg.

Federal prosecutors in New York last week recommended Cohen serve “substantial” prison time, despite his ongoing cooperation in the Mueller probe and other law enforcement investigations.

The prosecutors also said Cohen committed the campaign finance violations at the direction of "Individual-1," who has been identified as Trump.

Cohen concluded that he takes responsibility "for each act that I pled guilty to: The personal ones to me and those involving the President of the United States of America."

After Cohen spoke, Judge William Pauley said Cohen has pleaded guilty to a "veritable smorgasbord of fraudulent conduct."
