Where’s democracy? Brussels bars large demonstration against UN Migration Pact

 

A planned march against the UN Migration Pact in Brussels has been barred by the city’s mayor and the region’s Prime Minister, Belgian newspaper HLN reports.

 

“We cannot allow a ‘brown march’ in Brussels,” mayor Phillippe Close and regional Prime Minister Rudi Vervoort say.

 

The march, which was organised by several patriotic groups and nationalist political party Vlaams Belang was planned on Sunday.

 

On social media around 45,000 people showed their interest in the march against the UN pact, that makes migration a human right.

 

Officials in Brussels fear the manifestation could spread to other parts of the city and therefore the mayor made the decision to prohibit it.

 

“We thought the decision was made because of the terror attack in Strasbourg [on the Christmas market], but the problem doesn’t seem to be the safety of the protesters, but their right to unite and of freedom of speech,” march organiser Filip Brusselsmans says.

 

Ironically, he adds that the prohibition makes him think of “totalitarian regimes”.

‘Total mobilization’: Strasbourg bans public demos amid massive manhunt for Christmas market gunman

 

With a major operation underway to find the suspect, France has raised its threat level and introduced extra security and border controls, as well as a ban on public assemblies in Strasbourg, following the Christmas market attack.

 

The city of Strasbourg was subject to a “reinforced grid,” French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said on Tuesday night, hours after the attack on the market left two people dead and 14 others injured. “We are currently in a reinforced vigipirate stance,” he said, noting that demonstrations are now banned in the city to allow a “total” police mobilization to ensure public safety.

 

Announcing that protests and public demonstrations have been temporarily banned in the city, the minister explained this would allow the police to “totally mobilize” to ensure public safety.

 

"All assemblies, either stationary or as a march (cortege), are banned until the order is rescinded. Anyone in breach of the order will be subject to the penalties provided-for by law," Strasbourg authorities said in the official notice of the protest assembly ban, issued immediately after Castaner's statement.

 

Additional resources are being deployed to Strasbourg to help local units engage in a search for the suspect. More than 350 policemen and gendarmes were hunting down the attacker on Tuesday night. They were supported by helicopters and members of the RAID, the BRI and Opération Sentinelle forces, the minister said.

Anyone celebrating France’s terror attack will be immediately arrested – Italian Minister

 

Italian Deputy Prime Minister, and as many have seen defender of all things Italian, Matteo Salvini issues a strong warning to any who have considered ‘rejoicing’ at the Strasbourg attack.

 

Promising arrest of any who would consider celebrating the deaths of innocent people attending the Christmas market in France.

 

“Our postal police [service]is at the cutting edge and it is sifting the Web to find the heinous people who are celebrating someone else’s death,” ANSA quotes Salvini, he vows ”immediate arrest for anyone who has been rejoicing online over the last few hours.”

 

Three possibly four people were shot dead and 13 others injured, some seriously, in Tuesday’s terror attack near the famed Strasbourg Christmas Market.

 

The gunman, whom police and media have reported as Cherif Chekatt, a 29-year-old resident known to police for offences in Germany and France and for his radical Islamist views, has still evaded capture.

 

The Interior Minister promised on Wednesday that any found celebrating the shooting will be immediately sent to prison.
